Fruiting Chamber Contams
    #6317907 - 11/29/06 12:55 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

my first cake is about ready to birth, so after I dunk it in cold water i was going to throw it into my fruiting chamber. what precautions should i use to make sure it is sterile inside the fruiting chamber and that my mushrooms that grow will not be contaminated (heard fully colonized cakes are hard to contam, but i am just trying to make sure here, it is such a long process that i do not want to come this far and lose it all)

if you really want you can wet your perlite with 1/10 h2o2/water. and maybe mist down yer terrarium with the same. It's not really necassary tho.

Best method to keep contams from your FC is to make sure you fan it at least 3 times a day. FAE is the best method of keeping your FC contam free. contams thrive in stagnant air.

A FC is not a sterile enviroment and doesn't need to be. healthy, fully colonized substrate is VERY contam resistant on it's own.

listen to primates hes giving you some good advice. the h202 will help you cut down on bacterial contams and the fanning will stave off cobweb mold. So as long as your house isnt infested with black/green mold this should pretty much cover your bases.

Bacteria is an issue with colonizing jars, not fruiting chambers. A bit of bacteria in the FC is actually good.

It should be assumed that mold spores are going to be getting into the fruiting chamber, so the key is to make sure there is enough air exchange to prevent their growth. Molds grow in stale, still air, so the more you can do to keep fresh air flowing while still keeping the humidity high, the better. Air exchange is the key to preventing contaminants in a fruiting chamber, not sterility.
