Karmic Repercussions
    #6305507 - 11/27/06 05:40 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

If you see a homeless guy on the street, he asks you for a cigarette, and you give him one.. is that good or bad karma?

Discuss.

Jumped in a river, what did I see?
Black eyed angels swimming with me
Moon full of stars and astral cars, all the figures I used to see
All my lovers were there with me
All my past and all my futures
We went to heaven in a little rowboat
There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

karma just means action.  most likely the act of giving a cigarette will create a feeling of gratitude, however miniscule, in the homeless man, which will be reflected somewhere down the line in his social interactions.  in you it might generate a small feeling of conflict which will bring about some change in your thought processes and thus your interaction with the world around you

or something like that

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Drop the Karma and just discuss "good and bad". Then I would say it depends on the connection you make and good and bad remain subjective.

.  It was just a funny thought I had.

I mean, it's a good thing to give to the homeless I feel.  A homeless woman the other night asked me, 'sweetie would you buy me a chocolate muffin and some milk?'  I was taken aback by this specific request, and I went ahead and purchased the shit for her.

I was only toying with the idea of it being a positive or negative action because cigarettes, while providing pleasure (and perhaps relief) for the smoker, are also known to have detrimental effects on your health.  So how does one weigh against the other?

Then, if cigarettes bring an earlier death, one's chance to escape samsara comes sooner ( +10? ), however if one has not been cultivating the right state of mind, the opportunity is wasted ( -20? ).

Ultimately, I don't really care to know the answer (nor do I, in fact, believe there is a correct answer.)  It could be argued any number of ways.  I was just interested to see if others' train of thought took the same turns as mine.

Karma is just indirect or direct cause n effect. The interrelations of circumstances surrounding the event of giving a bum a cigarette would probably for the most part instantly dissipate into void of irrelevance due to the fact that the effect of this event is very minuscule to a) acts of charity, b) health concerns of the bum inhaling tobacco, c) engaging in some limited social interaction, nothing really revolutionary here. It probably be an event in the day that would net you some reflections of self worth through out the day, but something that eventually be forgotten in the near future. As with correlating events like these and attributing your good and bad luck down the line, who knows, maybe take to the extreme, go out and kill someone, but don't leave evidence, and see if run into a continuous spell of bad luck.

In the end we really don't know what are karmic actions will result in, just do actions with a kind heart and a goal to awaken. All else will come from this.

How about if a person is duped into doing someone elses dirty work; do they collect karma? or just the one's doing the duping.

So, like, in the 'afterlife' you may seek to get even against those who wronged you, not knowing they were duped, thereby acruing karma for causing harm to people who really don't know they were duped? Sounds complicated.
