Grain

My friend tried pf tek cakes and got really small mushrooms that lacked in potency so he wants to try grain. Everything i've read about grain says to inoculate it with agar but could he just poke holes in his quart jar like with the pf tek jars and inoculate it with liquid culture?

Hem... I am wondering where your sources are coming from....
Use LC, spores, agar, slur or G2G all work fine

I have done both LC and multispore inoculations with both rye and birdseed, most people I have talked to have never used agar(But many of us use Agar's advice)

Lc's or spores work should work fine..!
Agar is a whole other beast. You can isolate some nice ryz growth, and work on getting the strongest, fastest, largest, and any other trait fruits.

I think a lot of people here do that
It's a little different than PF jars since you will want some kind of filter. Place the hole in the center of the lid, and either stuff it with polyfil, or place a piece of tyvek between the lid and rim, and cover needle holes with tape. Shake the jars after 4-5 days to distribute the mycelium. There's teks around here somewhere that detail the process, but that's the basic method.

One of the teks that shows how to use the tyvek can be found by clicking my link below and following it to the other link I post.Tyvek kicks polyfill's ass

I would definitely say tyvek for grain jars -- with RTV inoculation ports

Polyfill, tyvek, or my favorite, synthetic filter disks all work. The filter disks can be used and re-used thousands of times, so they're the best in my opinion.
There's nothing wrong with polyfill. Just don't stuff it too tight into the hole or the gasses can't escape. If you use 1/4" holes with polyfill, drill two or three of them because one isn't enough. Trim the excess with scissors so you don't have polyfill hanging into your grain. RR

Where can my friend get polyfill? What is the best substrate to grow on? My friend wants to use whole grains of rice. Can't he just expand the rice first and then make a sterile vermiculite layer like with the pf tek? Could micropore tape be used instead of tyvek or polyfill?

Walmart- under 7$ for 5lbs.

Rice is probbally not the best option. Most people would recommend either rye or wild bird seed. Wild bird seed is easily available at Wal-Mart or most pet stores

When using a method like this, you miss out on one of the main benifits of grain. You can't shake the jar once it is partially colonized, spreading out the mycelium equally. Doing so would distribute your vermiculite, defeating it's purpose.

Ideally, yes. Tyvek and polyfill are much more cost effective, though.
