Popcorn Grain Spawn Q?

Well i'm back.. I've had a lot of success recently with the PF cake method but i'm just not producing as much as my friends and i can consume, so! it's time to go semi-bulk. I'm working with popcorn. I soaked it overnight, the jars i used were about half full, and now they're almost too the top! is simmering really necessary at this point, i would think that it would almost make the kernels too wet?

Cracked Corn?

Some simmer, some don't. I always simmer, the water content is COMPLETELY different if you don't. Most people have very bad simmering skills and it sends them running from it. And some are so good in their own ways they skip right past it.

You don't HAVE to keep that much grains in there. Sometimes you can't use all your grains, they get big- don't overfill your jars and if you have to toss some popcorn, do so.

Simmer half if you want to compare and contrast.

You need to boil, not simmer popcorn for two reasons. First is to help hydrate it fully, but an extra reason is the partial sterilization it affords that helps to kill the bacterial endospores.

Soak it for 24 to 36 hours in a large kettle, then bring to a boil. After half an hour or so at a full boil, drain well and allow the surface of the popcorn to air dry from the steam escaping off it. Your popcorn is ready to load into jars when it is twice its original size and completely dry on the surface.

Personally, I consider popcorn a poor choice of spawn material due to its large kernel size and high bacterial endospore count. The large kernels mean there is much less mycelium in a given jar then the same size jar would have if you used a smaller grain, since the mycelium colonizes the surface. Smaller grains=more total surface area. The bacterial endospores are a real problem with popcorn, resulting in many failures, even after PC'ing for two hours.

I have nothing but trouble with WBS and rye. I never had a problem with popcorn. I find it best to soak for 24+ hours, and then simmer 45 minutes. Once i see steam I start my 45 minute count. Also, do give it a couple hours to let the moisture dry off the surface of the corn before you put it on jars. Then PC for 45 minutes. I never get contams this way.

Mabye this isn't the best, but it does work for me.
