first of all, you will want deeper prints than that to be sure of the color.
second, brown spored lawn mushrooms that look like that are almost universaly Panaeolina foenisecii, the mushroom most commonly mistaken for Panaeolus subbalteatus on this board. there are also similar looking Psathyrella species.
if the black spored ones truely are black spored then they are a Panaeolus. in m experience, confirming Pan. subbalteatus or Pan. castanaeifolius in lawn occuring patches has not been completely cut and dry unless there was blueing observed. they could also be another species of inactive Panaeolus.
-------------------- Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Looks like a lawn-mower's mushroom. I found these in Colorado after a good rain. Edible, but not choice, nor active. But don't take my advice for sure, make sure you get a reply from one of this forum's mods.

Under 100x microscope spores are black for the larger ones. the spores are dark brown for the smaller ones. What is a way that one could distinguish Pan. subbalteatus from Pan. castanaeifolius

you're not trying to distinguish the two from eacheother, you're trying to identify your to whatever species in the genus they happen to be.
google Panaeolus.

What part of California are you in??
The prints are very light, so it is hard to tell what colour they are. I can tell the colour of two of the prints for sure.
You want the ones with black prints. Be SURE to keep the stems with the caps!

Hmmm, not sure how far south the Psilocybes tend to grow, I know in San Diego county I haven't seen any. Panaeolus subbalteatus and Gymnopilus junonius (aka G. spectabilis) may be your best bets.
