Potting soil for casing? Please help with any info!

Alright so I went all over and no one had 50/50 mix, so I bout 2 different kinds of potting soil, and a bag of perlite. One of the bags is for cacti and has compost product, sand, perlite and some calcium. The other is for African violets which comes with Pete moss, compost, perlite and a wetting agent? I was thinking I should mix them together and see how it turns out and also use the periled. Is one better then the other? Will they work? Please help, its my first time growing. I wanted to take a risk and try and case one of my jars.

Well, I've heard of grows from potting soil. It's not as great as it could be but hey, nothing can tell you what your yeild is becuase theres soooo many damn variables. It should be okay but I'd use the african violet stuff. I've found that cacti compost becomes to sticky. The point of a casing layer is to put somthing ontop that mold cant grow on. So the peat moss will work great. I'm not sure as to the wetting agent becuase I'm not framiliar with this but, i'd prob. go with the african violet mix.
Good luck -Hightimesreader

This post has some pics of my friend's pinsets with Miracle Gro Moisture Control with crumbled PF cakes. Great knotting density, just OK pinning--he's going to try this shortly with grains (better nutes should yield better flushes) He was all high and inoculated jars with like 10 different strains so I am sorry if he doesn't remember which varieties these are. Not bad, he told me the first flush was about 40G wet.

Potting soil used to be the old standard. You won't find 50/50 in stores, you make it your self. It's just half peat and half verm. Cactus mix also makes a nice casing layer. It evaporates fast, which is good, but don't forget to mist. RR

I personally prefer potting soils for casing these days. Very simple and just as effective as any of the other materials used for casing.
Simply pasteurize for an hour @ 160 degrees, allow to cool and apply it evenly to the substrate.

I could only find gigantic sized bags of vermiculite, so I decided to get Jiffy mix since it is basically the 50/50+ formula and is the only pre-mix out there that I have seen without fertilizer or some other type of nutrients.
The first Home Depot I went to had a few bags of Jiffy Mix with Vermiculite, but when I went back 5-days later it was sold out and they only had the formula with Perlite in it. I went to about 10 more Wallmarts and Home Depots and Targets and could only find bag after bag after bag of it with Perlite.
Finally, I went to Great Outdoors Home and Garden Store and they had a whole pallet of it with Vermiculite in it instead of Perlite. Yeah!!! I bought 6-bags of it for about $3.50 per bag. One bag was perfect for about a 3/4 inch casing layer in a 22-gallon Monotub.
