coco coir/fiber.. did i mess up?
    #6260499 - 11/08/06 03:57 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

So I've created 2 monotubs with this huge block of stuff labeled "Organic Coconut Fiber Growing Medium". I've been following the coir teks with it, and it seems like my spawn is colonizing the first tub which I created about a week ago.

But then I ran across this post. It states specifically to make sure you "get coir and not fiber".

Here's a pic of the stuff in my newly created monotub:

Have I made a huge mistake?

I just found the block I have online: http://cheaphydroponics.com/cart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=41

Thank you, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thats doesnt quite look right...
looks to raw and woody... almost like chips..

coir u buy by the brick, atleast i do
it should come in a compressed brick
u have to soak in water to break up.

something like this:

i just used 1 / 3 of it on a casing \/
recent casing < thats small amount i broke off was
more then enough for that

What I have is definitely a brick and it definitely expands A LOT when you add water to it...

I agree I do think it looks a little woody compared to the pics I've seen on the site. I'm starting to think I bought the wrong thing but it IS colonizing so I don't know. Very anxious.

Here's a closeup of what I actually have:

that looks like the whole tree grinded up,
coir for mushies is usually 80%+ husk.
But if its working then its workin, you kno?!
hope it works out good for you?

Yeah, thats not "coir" as WE know it lol. The coir we refer to comes in such a tight little brick, you have to take a knife to break/chip off layers, lol.

Yeah... guess those two tubs are wasted.

Innoculating more spawn now... trying out WBS as well.

I suppose I'll get the right stuff next time.  :frown:

Not wasted necessarily. It might work, you never know. Shrooms have a way of surprising even the most experienced, lol.

Quick question, wat did u spawn it in the first place?

if u atleast have a decent spawn and that stuff
has the same chemical / physical properties as coir(or any casing layer for that matter) then u will atleast get some mushies to make
prints from and maybe even "voyage" on.

all is not lost, not until it smells bad!

I'm just being pessimistic. I'm of course keeping both tubs going to see what happens. If they finish, I'll case them and post the results. I'm not really expecting them to finish, but you never know.

hey good luck man. You're running ur own experiment! LOL....good for you.....but really, too bad you got that woody stuff. My coir fluffed up like soil almost but very light and airy. But you never know, like has already been said, mushies can surprise all the time. Keep us posted.....

You'll be fine, next time get the good stuff. Some brands to look for are bed-a-beast, Forest Bed, etc...
