filter patch bags
    #6255525 - 11/06/06 09:40 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I just bought a whole box of filter patch bags and was planning to do the whole casing process tonight (Ryche Hawk 50/50+)...do I really have to buy an impulse sealer to seal the bags before sterilizing in the PC or can I just fold over the top of the bag?

you can fold them over and duct tape them shut, or twist them like a breadbag, and use a wire tie (something sturdy, not a twist tie) to tie it closed.

Impulse sealers are overated, but I like mine.

If you seal it first, the bag is likely to burst after pressure cooking as the PC cools. Fold the bag carefully along the creases, but before rolling it up, stick a sheet of tyvek or even a clean piece of cloth the length of the bag from the top to the substrate. The cloth will allow a path for steam to escape, then as the PC cools, the plastic will draw tight and the cloth will serve as a filter until you remove the bag. This allows people without a clean room for the PC to cool in to use bags.

Exactly where do I stick the piece of cloth?

The length of the bag above the substrate. I'll see if I can find a still picture. I know I have it on video.

I preseal my bags. I got the presealable bags, none have bursted open for me.

If you don't have the presealable, go with what RR and others say.

I ended up using a piece of 12ga electrical wire and twisted it tight over the top with a wrench. It still allowed me to slowly squeeze out some air so it shouldn't blow up. It's in the PC now...Thanks for the help.
