Well if they really care that much say its insence. OR tell them the truth and spew some facts at them like a motormouth. That may work but then your parents will think you are a total druggie because you know things about drugs.
It depends on the parents I guess.

Apologize for disregarding their rules,try and inform them about salvia as best you can and dont smoke salvia under their roof anymore.

The same thing happened to me about 6 years ago... Mom took piracetam, salvia leaf, and a glass pipe that I had never used for anything but salvia...
She thought it was pot and didn't know anything about the nootropics. The pipe was thrown away... it made her pretty upset because she knew I had been using MDMA and LSD and didn't approve, but I had been doing alright in school (I was home from college) and she didn't have much to go on besides "I took it and you're not getting it back."
If she thinks its illegal, tell her it's not, that it's freely available and that you thought it was an interesting experience that promoted dreamful sleep and such. Act like it's more like a supplement and less like a drug. Be prepared for the fact that if she might have heard about salvia on the news and will have an impression of it being closer to crack than anything else...

Well he could be a senior in high school as I once was. Making him 18 and allowed to be here so don't jump to comclusions.
My parents luckily were not too hard on me. Found instructions on how to make DMT oops.

my parents found my grow setup for mushies and all my equipment for extracting sally d and some mhrb and a san pedro cutting...all in one go, they were angry but now they realize i learn more from this than i ever did in school and know im doing it safely so its moderately ok.

I never talked to my parents about psychadelics but I have a feeling my parents were into them. My uncles did tell me they were huge stoners so that is a hint towards it. One day...One day...when I grow the balls I will ask my dad. Some father-son bonding like that would be good.

Yea my parents never freaked out at all when they found me with some sort of substance so they have to have some sort of understanding. unlike some of my friends whos parents are total christian moralists and all that they freak over weed I cant imagine anything else. Its pretty cool to have cool parents. Really a major plus. Especcially when you can listen to their like 500+ vinyls. I actually sorted through every single one and put it in ABC order. Im proud thats right.

burn it, keep the smoke in a large bag, place the bag over her mouth when shes either sleeping, or awake for fun, have her trip balls, then ask her what the hell are you talking about woman?!
...not reccomended, but it would be fun..

well i told my mom it was a strang tea that nobody likes but i do becuase its weird-something that goes along with my personality- and she shared a story about how my dad bought a shit load of chinese black tea once and never drank it. now.... she still has it. would it be weird to ask for it now? i did deny knowing what it was when she first asked me.

Stick to your guns, explain why you use such substances, turn them on to the facts. I did this, and although it took a little time, it paid off. They don't approve, but they respect my beliefs and individuality, and I love them for it.

No tell you mother that its a legel plant thats is simalar to cigs but safer for you is she starts bitching about you smoking at all tell her would you rather have me smoking cigs??? explain to her that it is used by monks and buddists when they meditate to achive higher exlightenment and you thought it would be cool to try. it worked for me also if they try to say its weed get them to smell it it smells nothing like weed
