Check out my new fish tank!

Well I'm into reef keeping (never having done it mind you, just read a lot). I saw this tank going for pretty darn cheap. Got it for $700.00 NZD = 471.512 USD. Its a 120 gallon tank. I'm gonna sell all the bits and peices I dont want - fish filter etc, which should pay 2/3's of it off! Then I'm gonna slap in an octopus.

1.5 mt long x 500 wide x 600 deep steel frame stand with rimu cladding rimu hood miracle mud sump(mud not included) eheim 2229 wet dry canister filter eheim 1262 return pump tunze overflow auto top off moonlight (home made) fluorescent lighting on main tank & sump live rock mixed with base rock small amount soft corals sailfin tang, green brittle starfish anemone with clownfish + extras
I do realise it looks pretty poor but its a very promising setup, if it can keen an anenome alive it must be fairly stable. And I'm gonna own Nemos! Actually one of my favourite fish is in there - a sailfin tang.
What do you think? Any closet reefers out there.

i'm so fucking jealous. that's exactly the kind of setup, cabinet and all, that i want...with an octopus too! lol
i'd really like a big reef tank full of clown fish. with maybe a few of those black clown fish thrown in too.
right now i'm happy with my little 30 gallon freshwater tank. here's an older picture, this little guy has doubled in size since then. he's bigger than my hand now.

What kind of fish is that in the picture? I used to have one that looked just like that when I was younger.

wow i'm jealous.
for the past 2 years i've wanted to set up a nano tank. unfortunately due to the fact that there are only 2 suppliers of marine aquarium equipment and livestock in the country i live in it's quite expensive. Estminated amount of money i'd spend on an aquarium+setup+live stock i picked would be roughly 1500 euros
i'm glad you made this post...your tank is beautiful! i'm jealous you have a 120 gallon tank! have you considered changing your lighting to metal halide so you can accomodate some LPS?
let's get a reef tank thread going!

The fish in question is totally an Oscar, maybe a tiger Oscar from the coloring?
Way to go on the tank! I'm happy with my freshwater cichlids right now, but a saltwater is always a fun investment. Can you just slap an octopus in there, or do you need other supporting life for it? What do they eat?
As much fun as having a good saltwater tank is, I prefer to just dive in God's big saltwater tank. Plus, the ocean is free and doesn't require a ton of maintenance

Looks sweet. I could use one, if I had the room and money. Gumby also has a very nice aquarium setup. He might have some pics shared in his gallery. I remember him showing them to me before.

very nice
when you get a nice growth set in there and hopefully some "bugs" try and find a madarine - super cool reef fish
I like lions and triggers but they are no good in a reef tank - well some small lions like dwarfs should be okay but it sucks when a $200 fish gets killed by one

Lion fish are illegal here.
NZ has heaps of gay controls on imports. If we didint have a species here in 1997 its not allowed in unless it goes through a huge expensive appraisal system that costs like $20,000.
In terms of the tank, I like the reefing side but an octopus is the path I'm going down. I'm doing things a little unusually, I am actually setting up a temperate tank - which will run at about 14C (about 55F) with the help of a big chiller. I will be able to add locally available animals, its going to be the best quality cold water marine tank in NZ from what I can see! Noone else really bothers, they just make a rock pool tank and chuck everything in there, but we have some very impressive non photosynthectic zoos and anenomies around, along with an amazing pink staghorn coral that would be mind blowing.

Very nice!
I actually just got done setting up a tank in my room.
Well more like a vivarium. Got 4 leopard geckos in it now. 19 cacti and other succulents. Some turtle shells from dead pets, and plenty of rock ledges and other hiding spots. Maybe i will get a picture up?

I love your saltwater tank, it looks awesome. I wish I had the patience and money for one. Live coral and anemonies are just so beautiful. I think it's the environment that's so attractive to me. One of my friends has a marine tank and when he bought coral there was a small anemone attached that has grown up really big. His black clownfish never leaves it's side, not even to go to the other side of the thank . Hope your tank flourishes!
