Three more species photos from today
    #6229360 - 10/31/06 12:01 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Man did it ever get cold here all of the sudden today. I found a few new species to photograph today.

The first one (U282) looks like it could be another Armillaria ostoyae group, but I wasn't sure when I processed the photos. It was growing right beside the path amongst Alder trees.

The second one (U283) was growing right in the horse dung in old growth fir habitat.

The third (U284) was growing in old growth fir habitat but off the ground on a mossy log. Kinda looks like a Lactarius species to me, but I could find any that looked like these ones.

Any ID ideas are greatly appreciated

Tim

Unknown_283_2 looks to me like it would be a inky cap of some sort - Coprinus (thats just a guess), it looks strikingly similar to a shaggy mane, although its obviously much smaller.
Could this be one of the few that remained within the coprinus genus?

Also does anyone know whats going to happen with the new (magic) Psilocybe genus as someone said the type specimen was Ps montana which is obviously not active. And how do they choose the type specimens anyway - anyone have an idea as to what it's going to be? My guess would be a wood lover (ie not cubensis) as that's the typical active Psilocybe substrate. I'd guess Ps cyanescens?

Oh is the first one a Cortinarius of some kind?

Awesome pics I might add - I really like the suspected inky one.

Great photos, I like the way you combine flash exposure with available light. I don't like to carry a tripod around, but your work demonstrates the fact that a little effort goes a long, long way!

Yes, number 1 is a Cortinarius I believe. You can see in these excellent pictures the cobweb-like cortina (veil) that gives the genus it's name. The one from horse dung is indeed a Coprinus (or perhaps Coprinopsis - not totally clear on the split yet), but I don't think it's a shaggy mane. The third one looks as if it could be a Gymnopilus of some sort. I haven't found many and am not totally comfortable IDing them. Could be something else like a Jack-o-Lantern.

Great pics.

If you're not bringing any specimens back with you for IDing then some of them will be impossible. Spore print color would go a long way toward helping get these guys IDed.

Back in 2000, when I met him (and took a seminar from him), Dr Bryce Kendrick lived in Victoria. He's a sharp guy and super nice. If he's still living there you can probably get some help from him on IDs.

Happy mushrooming!

This one looks like Coprinus Niveus. This other website actually describes it as growing on cow/horse dung; my book's picture also matches very well (and mentions cow/horse dung), so confidence is pretty high.

And on a second thought this one is probably the same thing, assuming it was growing on some sort of dung:

[Edit] Probably this one as well:

Thanks for all the help everyone. I've been stuck in my recording studio the past couple of days and just got out now.

nicuss, I think you got that Coprinus niveus one right, and I also believe that all of those images are the same species. Thanks for the help man.

Are you guys okay with it if I keep posting shots that I capture almost daily? I definitely do not expect them all to be ID'd, but any help is great.

Perhaps you could have a look through the whole unidentified section and see if there are any others that you can ID.

Glad you noticed that Koraks, and thanks. It took me awhile to realize that a certain amount of ambient light was necessary to capture the subjects and not have it look too "flashy". There are times when I use a triple speedlight setup with two flashes on the subject and one on the background, but I find that when using the available light that I only need one flash and that the images look more natural. Naturally when you are working with apertures from f11 to f40, a tripod is mandatory, as the shutter durations can be as long as 30 seconds in really dark areas.
