Pasturizing casing layer?

I use a 50/50+ casing layer with my cases. I keep getting cobweb. I was told by another member that this is due to lack of air exchange. Is it? I thought it was just a contaminant from a foreign spore landing on the case. Also, I am hearing that I should pasturize my casing layer. I haven't been using the board as much for about a year and now it seems more people support pasturizing a casing layer rather than sterilizing it in a pressure cooker. Would pasturizing the casing layer be better for ridding away contams?

yea, the consensus seems to be that pasteurizing is better then total sterilization since it leaves some micro-organisms that are beneficial. I'd pasteurize as well as give plenty of FAE's if you are having problems.

I , at this time , disagree wholeheartily.
My Pans grow will be a good test as Pans are known to contam fast with the mean green and my casing is going at it sterilized , and 3 months old , lol . http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6212058#Post6212058
So far , my results the last year , with cubes , has been stellar , and my best ever , with sterilized , 50/50+ , casing layer mix . It really is whichever works for you though . I've tried both and this works for me , ,( sorry , had to run , heard Bessy hissing and she doesn't make a sound till she hits 25 PSI ), best .
If you are having problems with cobweb though , increasing the FAE is the answer . Cobweb loves stale , humid air . Well , we all know mushroom air is humid , at least it better be , lol , so don't let it sit around and get stale . Increase FAE
What is your casing mix , coir ?

Cobweb doesn't grow from spores, it grows from mycelial fragments that are floating in the air.
Pasteurization is superior to sterilization because it keeps the substrate alive with beneficial bacteria.
As HC said, fresh air exchange is the primary key to avoiding cobweb or other molds. Straight peroxide(3%) melts and destroys cobweb on contact. RR

I couldn't figure out why this year's grow is getting cobweb. But, now I see. I now use tupperware casing tubs with lids and then cover it completely with the lid after making it. Last year I used a disposable tin tray with tin foil to cover it. Last year I didn't have this prob.
Last year I sterilized my casing layer and had no probs though. I might pasturize one or two cases to see whats up.
Thanks for all the input.

I have had success(so far) on one casing, where All I did was wet the dry ingredients(50/50 also) with water that had a few drops of bleach(literally, a few), and myc is gobbling it up and no signs of contams. just me messing around, havn't read anything on it or even know if its bad to do.
