Ireland season over? Beginning?
    #6213337 - 10/26/06 08:57 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there im from the south west part of Ireland, Cork to be exact.

I have been out to macroom golf course, where 2 years ago I found about 60 to 80 Liberty Caps, but this year so far I've found absalutly nothing. This was about 2 weeks ago now. Also, today I went searching in which apear to have actually been westish facing fields after checking with google maps. The fields seemed to be ideal for their growth, as they were cow fields, but nothing was found.

I was just wondering does any one know the situation of the liberty caps in ireland, am I to late, or is it coming around now?

About two days ago we picked some very small looking mushrooms, which alot of them appeared to be liberty caps, but there were others in there aswell. We ended up not taking them as there wernt that many of which were definatly Liberty caps.

My knowledge so far for finding them is, (please correct me if im wrong)

Early morning (8 to 12?)
Grass slightly long with dew?
Rained previously for the last 2 days
South facing slopes
Manured fields
Colf courses (what part generaly?)

Can also some one tell me what the life cycle of the liberty cap is?
As in if I pick a bunch today, and flick them before I pick them. Is it the next day more will be where I flicked them, or next year?

Do the mushrooms grow up fast from the ground in the morning, and go away as the day goes on and pop back up coming near to dusk, and go away again and pop up again at dawn?

Many thanks
Coz.

Hey man. Im not 100% sure as to the situation in Ireland but i have been finding libs in the North East of Scotland for the 5 weeks so i'd imagine they are still popping out near Cork. Try looking in fields that have sheep, generally seems like the place to be. Golf courses could be a bit dodgy as they use a load of chemicals in the soil. A good rain is certainly a big factor in their numbers but im inclined to beleive they need a fair amount of sunlight too. Last week it rained solid for a week here but there was no sign of libs anywhere. Went searching again after a clear bright day and they were everywhere. I generally go looking mid afternoon and normally have no troubles.

Why?

I find dry grass and cloudy weather perfect for hunting. When the grass is wet the caps will have a darker colour, making them harder to find. And sunny weather will create too much shadows in the grass, shine in your eyes and so on...

i really should tell u to do your own research!
but seems like u could really use the help...

your not too late or too early... if they are not growing where u expected by now i'd look somewhere else before the frosts kick in.

sheep pastures are better then cow pastures cos the sheep aint so heavy and they dont mess the ground up so much when its wet.

golf courses are not ideal as they use alot of chemicals on the courses. mushrooms concentrate these chemicals.

there is no ideal time for picking, liberty caps grow at all times, given the correct conditions. they dont "pop up" over night.

grass can be any length really, except very long.
shorter grass grows shorter shrooms which are easy to see.
they will grow taller in longer grass but harder to see.
so short grass is best, but not too short.

it dosent matter if the grass is wet at the time of picking or not, but make sure u have had enough rain prior to picking.
u will find libs are hydromorphic, meaning that they change colour depending on their water content... wet fields grow brown shrooms, drier fields grow whiter/creamy shrooms.

i dunno wot u mean by "manured fields" they like to grow in pastures with livestock that keep the grass short. obviously the animals shit all over but libs dont grow directly from manure.

south facing? hmm my fields are on a west facing slope, but i guess it dosent matter so much.

flicking libs is not a quick fire method, that will just ensure spores for suture seasons, maybe next year.
i dont know how long the spores take to form mycelial colonies and then produce mushrooms.

dont pick the same spots 2 days in a row, u are likely to find little on the second day.
i like to leave at least 2 days between picks. 3 or 4 is better, u can pretty much guarantee more mushrooms have grow by then.

your new to this right? :hehehe:

go take a look at my pics, they should help u identify. LIBERTY CAPS

and this thread may give u some tips too.  Liberty Cap Finds

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
