What are metabolites?
    #6205798 - 10/24/06 11:10 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hi. I read a thread in the contam forum that said a slight yellow discoloration of the mycellium, like a bruise, was called a "metabolite", and that it was perfectly fine.

What are they?

Can they be widespread on the mycellium?

What conditions cause them to form?

Are any species known for producing more metabolites than others?

And, most importantly, how can you tell if it's a metabolite and not a mold? Appearance and smell, I assume.

Metabolite is generally in a liquid state. It can range in color from light yellow to dark gold.
Mycelium utilize metabolite biosynthesis for multiple reasons.
Essentially it is a bi-product. Some theorize that the metabolites are created to help fight infection.
Biosynthesis of myceilum metabolites is perfectly normal.

Antibiotic drugs such as penicillin are, and have been made from fungal metabolites for over fifty years. It is not a theory. I have used a syringe to draw metabolite from a grain jar and placed it on bacteria in a petri dish. It kills the bacteria dead within hours.

I think what I have on a couple of my PF cakes may be metabolites. Can someone please confirm this?
