getting a pressure cooker
    #6201960 - 10/23/06 01:58 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hi,
I'm planning on buying a pressure cooker to do the grain method. Im just not sure what size to get. What are some reliable brands and how many jars can each size hold aproximately.

From what I understand, it is best to do it with pint jars, so how many pint jars can a 7L PC hold? 20LPC? 5.5L PC?  and others.

THanks

It's best to do grains at least quart size . Join the scavenger hunt and win one .

Spend the money once on an AA and take care of it. There's really not that much to take care of except for keeping the metal to metal seal lubricated. Go as big as you can because if you cheap out on that you'll be regretting it once you decide to go a lil bigger or don't have the time to pressure cook jars all night or all day.

Keep in mind you have to wait for the cooker to get up to temp before starting the sterilizing time, and then wait for it to cool so you can open it. That can basically double the time it takes.

I've got an AA 915 which I recommend you don't go any smaller than. Not sure how many pints it holds but I know it holds 7 quarts jars. It's a good fit for me. I probably would have went one higher if i had the money at the time though. Got it for $139 shipped off the internet. I don't remember what site. There are some great deals you can get out there for older pressure cookers, but I recommend just being safe and getting a good new AA if you're new to pressure cooking

AA 921 is a great all around PC.
With care, it will last 200 years.

I believe the "wide" describes the jar opening , or mouth , not the jars size itself .

Yeah I think hippieChick is right. I don't think the wide mouth jars are any taller, and if they are then it's miniscule. Regardless, the jars have several inches to spare on top until they touch the lid, so your good.

Like Tippinthru said I wouldn't waste my time with anything less that the AA 921,Thats what I have and I wish I would have went bigger,It does suck having a ton of jars waiting in line for the 1st batch to cool down before you can PC them,It holds 10 quarts

If you are into this seriously , it doesn't hurt to have a few inferior models around also . I don't want to fire up the 941 to sterilize some LC's or syringes and the such .

While I'd never consider anything but a 941 as my work horse , thanks Agar , I wouldn't want to give up my Presto's either .

I didn't start with an AA941  But I also didn't make the mistake of starting with one that wasn't capable of doing at least 7 quart jars .

How much are you willing to spend? You can find an AA 921 for less than $200 shipped on Ebay, brand new.

Hm, looking at those pics, those PCs look massive compared to the ones I saw at canadiantire.

I was hoping to get one for a bit over $100, but i guess it isnt going to be the case.

I assume most of those are 20Ls or more.

I'm in Canada so from the PC's ive seen on ebay.ca, none of them are large enough.

Anyone know of any stores around Toronto I should look out for?

Thanks.

And thanks for the quick replies everyone

EDIT:

Also, is the gauge a necessity on the PC? i saw some PCs without it.

EDIT AGAIN:

just found this on the CanadianTire site. When i went in the store, the employee said that none of the PC's have gauges, but i guess he lied because:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/produc...D=1161731261261

How does that PC look?

THanks.

I rely on my gauge a lot with my PC, i sucked not having one before. I didn't know if i was in the right pressure range or not.

If you don't want to invest money in an All American just yet, the Presto 23-Qt is usually around 80-90 dollars (about 100 after shipping). It holds 7 quarts. The first one I bought was a 12 quart Mirro, for about $50, and it holds 4 quarts.

Small PCs heat up faster, so they're nice when doing LCs with short cook times.

Hmm, all the adds say 7 quart. Mabey there's a newer model out, or they just rate it for 7 quarts.

Am I correct in the thinking that you use PC's on the stove? Or are they plug-ins? Are there plug-ins? Trying to make this as stealth as possible, and a big PC on the stove would be a sore thumb sometimes(dont ask for an explanation)
