Gas Exchange

After inoculating jars, I've heard a lot of stuff about taping over the holes and tightening the lids but I've also heard that you should give them air and stuff, any info on this will helps.
Also, when you put your fully colonized pf cakes in the FC, say you're using just perlite for humidity, in order to promote gas exchange, can a dust mask be used in place of polyfill?

you shouldn't really need to tape over the holes after inoculation. if you used tin foil during sterilization, just leave everything as-is. don't touch them. just leave them in the pressure cooker or pots you sterilized them in until they're colonized, shouldn't have a problem. Leave the lid on the sterilizer and all, just move the whole works to a closet or something. i'll yield the other questions to others, as i have no idea.

I poke 3 holes on my lids and cover with tyvek. I use one of the holes for innco, and i cover it with micropore tape. The tyvek will allow just enough air to pass through.
Are you talking about using a dustmask to plug holes on a FC tub? It might work, but how are you going to seal the holes with the mask? Polyfill is like $2 for a neverending bag... seriously.

Tyvek and micorepore tape has never done me wrong,You can buy a never ending bag of polyfill for cheap but it is a terrible pain in the ass and more frustrating to use than you could believe.I have had it fly right out of the hole in the jar lids when I shake grain jars,Nope no polyfill for me ever again unless I'm making another double tub or something

I do both polyfill and tyvek.
Let's read the question .
You use poly fil and tyvek on PF TEK . I use neither .
You can leave them taped for a while if you want . Mycelium actually thrives in a high CO2 environment but eventually you will have to let CO2 out . That is the difference between Gas Exchange and FAE(Fresh Air Exchange), which colonizing subs do not need .

Thanks for the info everyone!
But would it be okay to just leave the jar with nothing covering the 4 holes on the top with the dry verm layer in a clean rubbermaid with the lid on.

This is the ideal situation for PF jars yes. No tape should provide enough Gas exchange while the verm is a barrier for contams.
