First (Successful?) Hunt - Would appreciate help on ID'ing! (Spore Prints Updated!)
    #6194492 - 10/21/06 02:19 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, went hunting for the first time today after a good rain from the past 3 days. Temp. today is 75ish and all of these mushrooms were found growing from or close to horse manure.

I THINK numbers 1, 3, 4, 9, 11 and 14 could possibly be Psilocybe semilanceata but I'm not 100%. Also, 2, 5, 6, 7, 12 and 13 look like Psilocybe coprophila if I had to take an educated guess. I'll post the pics up now and do spore prints afterwords and give you guys an update on that.

As of now, I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

UPDATE:

Caps were left for 3 hours. Spore prints are as follows:

1 - Light to medium grey. Medium print.
2 - Heavy grey, almost black with very, very slight red tint. Dark print.
3 - light to medium grey. Light print.
4 - light grey. Light print.
5 - medium to dark grey. Heavy print.
6 - light to medium grey. Medium print.
7 - light, light purple. Very, very light print.
8 - dark brown but lightly printed. Dark print.
9 - dark brown. Medium print.
10 - medium to dark grey. Medium print.
11 - medium grey. Light to medium print.
12 - dark brown. Dark print.
13 - black, heavy print. Dark print.
14 - no print

Interesting finds, but I cannot put a definite ID on any of them. I see no liberty caps, possibly an inocybe or two, perhaps some psathyrellas and/or panaeolus.

Thanks for your help. ID'ing mushrooms from horse/cow poo isn't as easy as I thought it would be. After looking at many, many pics, I can't even put a finger on a single one of them. There are no veil rings on any of these mushrooms, therefore it made it hard to differentiate between an actual active or a non-active due to the (much) higher amount of species that aren't active.

EDIT: Also, there was no bruising when these mushrooms were handled. The stipes were very thin and striated.

You need to leave your mushrooms printing longer in order to get a good dark print. A dark print is required to distinguish between black and dark purple brown.

Though some of your mushrooms appear to be of the Genus Psilocybe, none of them are active. No Liberty caps there.
