"sweet" smell in incubator.
    #6191269 - 10/20/06 02:16 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

just got back from my buddies'. went over to check on casings in our FC and a couple we have in the incubator. When i opened the incubator there was a very sweet(sugary) smell coming from the inside
of it. Very little/no sign of myc popping through. i'v heard bacterial contams can smell sweet like this. is this a possibility? has anyone else ever had a similar occurence?

I did mist them a bit more then previous casings before covering and incubating. could this be the culprit?

hehe and if it is bacteria is there anything that can be done to save them?

thanks

If you're using WBS, I wouldn't worry.. My WBS smells sweet right out of the pc.

If its contaminated you will know very soon,I wouldn't worry about it too much if the casings still look OK in a few days

ok well ill keep an eye on them. ATM they look absolutly fine appearance wise.

BTW the casing layer is verm/peat+CC. Also the incubator had not been touched since putting them in(3 days ago.) it was also covered tightly /w a blanket.

I love that smell. =) Can't wait on my current (very small) projects running (1 pan cyan, 1 cub - hawaiian) to be read to come out of the jar. I can smell it already, and just shot em up a few days ago hehe.

any insights from any of you mods/old hands?  not that i dont totally appreciate all yer guys input as well   hehe the mods just put my mind at more rest.

Also i didn't notice this smell on my other casings when incubating..granted they were a bit dryer and they were checked more frequently so maybe it just aired it out more.  Just a bit concerned because of how strong the smell is.  As soon as i opened the incubator i could smell it.  and it came right back after taking them out and making sure everything was looking ok underneath the casings(we have a cardboard box under them to help prevent hot spots).  checked an hour later and it smelled the same.  it's definetly coming from the casings.  kinda smells like something carmelizing.  not bad at all just strong and sweet.

Thanks

lol pleasantness... idk..i just smelt my incubating casing and it smelt like sweet nasty socks. looks fine tho. I had one cake that i birthed today. shit looked soo good and ready. when i removed the dry verm there was yellow mold in the center. i scraped that shit out to see how much there was. it only went like a cm down untill it hit a layer of blue green shit. Had to toss it. lost 4 out of 4 b+jars. at least i still have B+ LC and quite a litter of GT cakes on the way.

Went over and did some further more through examination/smelling. definitely bacteria. we're gonna try to save em(keeping them well away from anything else.) we'll see. hehe if it works ill post how we did it.

the cause was almost definitely too moist a casing layer applied.

when i opened the syran and smelled closer it was definitely a sour/sweet smell. more like the apple type smell.
