External reservoir to automatically top up cool mist and ultrasonic?
    #6178239 - 10/17/06 11:32 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hello...i would like to build a backup water supply for my cool mist and ultra sonic using a reservoir and syphon tubes.
essentially it will consist of a 10 gallon bucket slightly elevated with two hoses fed to each of the appliances.
as the water is consumed in the appliances the pre-primed syphon tubes would automagically draw fresh water from reservoir maintaining a consistent water level at all times in each of the appliances.
This way my only duty would be making sure the reservoir has enough water and wouldn't have to even look at it for at least a week, which is just perfect for me.

The reason I need such a setup is my work often takes me away from my hobby for 5-7 day periods.
My wife has no problems caring for the fruits...however wants nothing to do with maintaining the equipment.
I don't like the thought of my equipment drying up and burning out...or possibly causing a fire hazard.
Also it would make my setup even more automated.

Has anyone here built a reservoir type setup? if so any links or pics?
I would appreciate any input or thoughts.

thx.

i am in the process of doing this to my cool mist right now with a 5 gallon crystal rock jug.

but i am still in the planing stages

i have all the materials i am using a home made mini float valve inside of my cool mist. it has a piece of stainless steel as an anchor and when the float drops to a certain point it lets gravity Fed water in to the cool mist

yeah I'm in the planning stages too.
tuff one is going to be the ultrasonic as its under pressure.
good luck with yours!

if the top reservoir is sealed, you can put a air vent tube in the top and run it down into your humidifier and stop it at the level you want to maintain, then run another tube from the bottom of the reservoir into the top of your humidifier. when the water level drops below your vent tube opening it will bleed off some air and allow water to flow Thur the other tube. I've never done this but it looks like it would work

Thanks man...I've already got it figured.
Just waiting for the marine silicone to dry...it increases water volume of cool mist by 3X...plenty for a 7 day leave of absence.

I'll post pics this time tomorrow.

Later.

I am not in the best frame of mind due to the Z's I ate. But I just went to the bathroom and the toilet top was off and I thought of this post.

My idea is that make some kind of floating weighted ball that will float and plug the feeding water hole when full and let water in until full again.

Hope this helps

ha ha..believe me, i was already down at home depot ruffling through there shelves looking at toilet assemblies...opening their packaging and pissing them off.
They are just too big to fit inside the cool mist, even if you modified it i think it would result in failure...if not right away, certainly down the road.
The last thing i want is something that is going to leak and make a mess and burn out my equipment.
Dint get me wrong, i'm sure it could be done...in a machine shop or something.
Anyway i've found a fool proof way for both cool mist and ultrasonic...they are two completely different methods, as the ultrasonic is under pressure.
Try and drill a hole in the top of US fill it with water and see what happens...just make sure its NOT plugged in( that was a joke, please dont try ).
I get my digicam back tomorrow, i'll post pics then...i cant really explain it by typing.

Later.

I know toilet things wouldn't work. Just got the idea after starring at it for about 10 min while trying to take a piss

GL look forward to pics

hey guys I dont mean to hijack your thread or anything but I thought maybe my question could help you out.

What I want to do is take one of these except the blue part is round:

http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:8s.../humidifier.jpg

I wanna take one of those, pull out the humidifer unit, fit a styrafoam circle around it so it floats and then place it in a 10-20 gallon bucket with a fan connected to to the bucket and a tube going out of the bucket providing FAE and humidity to my tubs.

Sound plausable?

no sense. Agar made things like that with fogers with much better success

Yeah I know its the exact same thing as a homer setup but instead of a floating fogger, I would use a floating humidifer head.

What type of store would carry a fogger unit?? I dont want to have to order one online.

Well I've finished the cool mist external reservoir...nothing special but if you want to have a look its located in the red link below (near the bottom).
It really makes a great addition.

Should have ultra sonic up tonight.

Later!

Well thats it...i give up on the ultrasonic.
no matter what i try the pressure just sucks the water in to the base where the motor is...needless to say i haven't applied power to it.

I took it apart and its drying under a fan.
anyway its a 6.5 L and goes for 15 hrs on one filling...so if i go 10 min every 2 hrs X 7 days = 14 hrs.

Looks like I'll have to add some damp perlite to the bottom of my greenhouse.
Between the cool mist and the damp perlite i should be good.

anyway heres a pic of the cool mist reservoir...

details can be found in the link below if anyone is interested.

Later!

I plan on gutting a ultrasonic and using it in a 18 gallon tub to act as the reservoir. If it works well I will post how to do it.

Do you have an ultrasonic and understand how they work?
it's nothing like a cool mist.

Yep, I don't think I would tearing one apart if I didn't. I wont be needing a cool mist for my setup.

How is that going to work? You need to use two hoses from the tub to the coolmist. One at the top of the waterline at the 'full' mark on the coomist, and one at the bottom. This will feed evenly as the coolmist uses the water.

It becomes one unit...as the cool mist consumes the water it is drawn from reservoir.
water level of cool mist and reservoir are always the same.
notice the sharpie marks on CM and reservoir.

It basically takes alot longer for the cool mist to run out.
if i filled the reservoir anymore the cool mist would over flow.

Gut out the ultrasonic vibrator and get it to float just below the water line in a much larger resivoir. Vent that to whatever you want to humidify.
