    #617758 - 04/24/02 08:52 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

I want to use the oven to sterilize the casing material. i read the faq and some teks and i only found sterilzation info for pressure cookers. I dont have any autoclavable bags. Any info would help. OVEN... How hot? How long? etc...

I believe doing it in a oven would result in a very very dry casing and putting water in it afterwards in inviting contams.

For autoclavable bags, use the ones your perlite, verm etc came in, those work just as fine. I pasturize mine by putting it in a perlite bag cut down to a decent size. Put you casing material in it fold the top over and place a plate or such to keep it from opening. (someone is borrowing my damn PC) I put a thing for steaming veggies (they open up like a flower) etc on the bottom of the pan with enough water to reach the bottom of the steamer. I then put my bag in there keeping the bag away from the sides (ive never had a prob with melting but just to be sure..check on it) put a top on the pan and something heavy enough to apply a little more pressure to the top of the pan (holds in a little bit more steam) I then pasturize it for 1hr 30min or so. After it is done I let it cool inside the pan because it will be HOT as hell to handle. After it has cooled enough to touch it I put it in a clean room and let it vent the heat out(i leave it for 2 hours and let it become room temp). You dont want to be casing with burning hot casing which will result in death to the mycellium and to your hands. I have yet to have a problem with this.

I do recommend a pressure cooker tho. Invest in one..it will save you headaches later.
