Colonizing with Mycelium
    #6176094 - 10/16/06 06:10 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Does colonizing a jar using the mycelium of another jar compromise the integrity of the jar from which you took the mycelium sample? Can I still induce fruiting from the original jar?

as long as the original cake was 100% colonized it will be fine but you gotta make sure to be steril when transferring the mycelium.

the original cake can of course still be fruited.

The degree to which the jars integrity would be compromised is dependent upon the mass of the sample you took from it. This loss of mass would result in less nutrients for fruit bodies thusly resulting in smaller yields.

It would also depend on the extent to which the original jar was colonized. If the jar was not 100% colonized your taking a sample from it could result in contams.

On the other hand, one must ask ones self: When does the jar become a sample? If one takes 50% of the jar as a sample, is whats left a sample or a jar? How about 90%? Is it a jar or sample that remains? Maybe neither, perhaps this "sampleing" produces a new item for conceptualization. More to the point is that perhaps there was never a jar to begin with and therein lies the problem.

keep in mind the amount of mycelium needed to start another jar is minimal. you should be fine as long as you are careful and take a conservative amount of myc.
