stalled fruiting
    #6166058 - 10/13/06 02:10 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I have been fruiting a treasure coast wbs cake for 3 going on 4 weeks and the mushrooms growing on the top of the cake have stopped growing. There were two mushrooms which grew out from the bottom and i had to pick them because their caps opened. i was wondering what i should do with the other since they are not aborts, are about 1.5 inches high, and mushrooms continue to pin and grow out from the sides. I seems like there are no flushes, just random mushrooms going at any speed they like. Any information?

I've got the same thing happening to me right now. Am probably going to have to pick a couple mushrooms off of two (pf) cakes tonight, as their veils are opening up. Meanwhile, elsewhere on the same cakes, there are what look like very healthy, albeit younger, shrooms growing. The 'premature' ones look weird--pale, small; I even have two 2-inch or so stems without caps! What the hell?

So come on guys, what gives?

I snapped a pic of the little fella I'll probably harvest soon, next to some that aren't ready yet.

( Check out the odd mushroom on the left, whose veil is already torn. )

Pick them before they turn INTO aborts and start rotting on your cake.

They look good in the pic. It's a shame they stopped growing.

Good luck!

would too much humidity stall the mushrooms? i changed the perlite so that i was moist since the old perlite was too wet. the fae is fine but maybe the humidity was too high. also where i live the temperature flexuates between 60 and 74 degrees so maybe that might have something to do with it. i would just like information so i can prevent this in the future

seriously does anyone here have any information. ive been searching this website for the past hour and all i have found is paranoid kids freaking out because their jars are half colonized. the temperature in my house is 69 F, humidity is 92-95, cakes made of wbs in a trash can filled with perlite. i fan 8 times a day the trash can sits on my desk getting plenty of indirect sunlight.

It sounds like your cake dried out. 92% to 95% is not enough for cakes. Without a casing layer, you need to shoot for 99%. Make sure there's no standing water in your perlite, and fluff it up occasionally as it won't evaporate as well when it gets packed down. I'd pick those fruits, then soak the cake overnight under water in your refrigerator.

right on man thanks alot for the help. the cake does feel a little light to me. i have one more mushroom growing out from the side that started yesterday and id say there are two days before the veil breaks. should i just pick all of them and dunk or should i wait for this one to get bigger.

You can soak overnight with pins on the cake. It won't hurt them.

should i pick the small stalled 2 inch mushrooms before i dunk or should i leave them on the cake during the dunk and roll in hopes that they will be rehydrated and grow again?
