i know a bit baout cars, but not that one.
honestly, i advise everyone to go buy a diesel, as they are more efficent and can be run on a variety of fuels, many of which can be made in ones kitchen

Mitsubishi doesn't suck if you get the right car, I noticed that you live in Australia, try and find an older Evolution. Nothing can beat the 4G63 motor and they should be fairly cheap.

Some mitsubishis are nice, but the lancer in particular isnt that great. A 1.5L engine is pretty much the smallest you can go (i am assuming you are looking at the seventh or sixth generation lancer, the sixth being made from '92-'95 and the seventh being made from '95-'03, each being pretty much the same except for the slightly different body styles). Since '03 they now make a 1.3L, but the frame weighs alot less now. What is the body style on the lancer you are looking at? If it is a coupe then this is not so bad, you will be able to putter along at decent speeds. However if it is a wagon i wouldnt be caught dead driving that shit, itll take you several minutes to get up to 65 on the highway, heh. Also, alot of mitsubishis arent great cars overall. Alot of times the tranny goes at like 140k, and ive seen alot of people with mitsu's (mostly lancers, mirages and eclipses) having to get their alternators and starters replaced a ridiculous number of times, and they have a lot of fuel pump problems. If someones driven the thing to an empty tank alot of times before you bought it, chances are youll have to get the fuel pump replaced before 100k (and this costs over $400). If your looking for a small and relatively inexpensive car that you can decently speed around in, check out some used hondas or toyotas like the guy above me said, you cant go wrong. Even a 10 year old honda thats been treated decently well is infinitely more reliable than a 5 year old lancer thats been pampered.
EDIT: Now that i reread your post and i see that the car has a carbuerator instead of a FI and you are in australia i am pretty sure you are looking at a '92-'96 GL trim model (probably 94 or 95), which i dont think is too bad. Ive never really heard much about people ever having to replace the carbuerator in mitsubishis (but then again there arent so many mitsus with carbos driving around today) so that kind of cuts out the problem of having to eventually replace the fuel pump. However, if you ever do have to replace the carbuerator it will likely cost you over a thousand dollars, probably about 200 just for the labor as well. I would still look into a honda or toyota.

DON'T buy that car. Don't ever entertain the idea of buying a pre-riced car, whatever it is.
It's very likely that thing has been driven into the ground for the majority of it's life. Anyone who lacks the respect of a vehicle enough to make it look like that is probably not going to treat it properly.

What a fucking piece! 150,000 kilometers? That thing should be dead ten times over, dont waste 6k on that thing. It hasnt even been modified or riced out at all like everyone here is saying, just rims/tires/bodykit/stereo. Its still got the original engine!! Basically your paying for the previous owner's mistakes (money spent on body kit, money spent on stupid flashy rims, money spent on the stereo). He probably figured out how fucking stupid it was for him to put all that money into that piece of shit, so he wants to make his money back. Heres the same car, nearly ten years newer, with 70,000 miles (not kilometers) on it: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ca...e=&cardist=1193 And that was just the first car i saw searching for lancers, if you have your heart set on a lancer, by all means, do not get the one your looking at. It will look real pretty sitting in your yard broken down.

Remember it's 6k Australian. 4500 was spent on extra's (which I will be getting anyway if I get a lancer)
I figured if I did buy it, I could totally replace the engine with a say 4 cylinder 1.8L, costing around 1.5k??
Is this logical or is it just too much of a dump to bother?

It is true that body kits and such are expensive and i wouldnt doubt it cost 4500 to do, but my point is that you shouldnt put a body kit or flashy rims on such an old car unless your really in love with the thing. And replacing the engine will cost alot more than $1500, perhaps $1500 to purchase the engine, but then you need someone to remove the old engine and put the new one in, and make all the appropriate connections, and labor doesnt come cheap, especially since they will probably know they can gouge you as you are spending an outrageous amount of money to fix up a 12 year old lancer. And the engine is just a part of the problem on cars as old as these, i guarantee you that soon you will be having problems with alot of other parts, its just not worth the money to keep an old car alive. I would say buy something newer and wait until you can afford the mods, i think thats more logical than buying a piece of shit with all the mods you want and replacing the engine just because you like how it looks. Im not trying to attack you or anything, i just think its not worth the money.

unless that equates to about $38.50 USD, it's not worth the money, it's high milage, most likely raced a lot, it's a rolling repair bill

for that car you'll be dumping more than $3k US for a new engine, suspension, brakes and drive train parts to handle the extra, assuming you do all the work, it's about $7k if it's done by a shop, you'll be into it for the price of a new lancer by the time it's drivable, those upgrade would be essential BTW
