Rye Grain Help
    #6130971 - 10/04/06 12:02 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

OK, i bought a pound of rye berrys' from the health food store like was suggested to me.

Well, i soaked it for 24 hours, then i rinsed it, drained, then pressure cooked for 70 minutes at 15 psi. Well the grains seem kind of dry.. They are still a bit wet, but looks like the outsides of some of em are dry, but wet inside? should i just use like 5 cc's of spore water or LC on em to give em more water or what?

Or should i re do it and simmer it this time? Can i use the same grains?

Thanks for the tips.. BTW, i got my own spore prints, so spores are not a big deal to me..

after you soak and rinse you need to simmer... from what you said i'd guess you skipped this step... this is where the moisture is added to the grains. throw away the jars, prepare new ones and don't forget to simmer.

simmering is very much optional

NEXT time (meaning keep what you got) here is what you do

soak your grain for 24 hrs in a 75% D H2O and 25% coffee

drain the water and simmer for 30 min in D H20

Load up the jars and PC for 1 - 1 1/2 hours @ 15 PSI

Works great

I have always soaked and simmered with fine results with rye but I agree with babo on not throwing out the jars you have..I mean what do you have to lose except for some spores and you said its not like your running low on spores so I say go for it.Good luck

Rye SHOULD look dry on the outside. Moisture on the surface of the grains will only interfer with colonization. Grains prepared on the dry side will also colonize faster than wet grains and they are also much less succeptable to contamination.

Personally, I rinse first to remove the dust and chaff, then soak, then simmer, then dry and load jars. Removing the dust and chaff before the soak makes the grains less likely to clump up later.
