Adobe Headache 6.0 *SOLVED*
    #6114579 - 09/29/06 08:13 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I've got a problem with Adobe Acrobat 6.0

When I try to open any PDF, AA won't open. It doesn't load the plugins/components you usually see loading up, and you end up with AA's initial screen that won't open, just sits there eating CPU.

I've repeatedly deleted all things adobe and reinstalled them: to no avail.

I removed all software related to PDF files, one I even had to pry from system32 and the registry: to no avail.

Vital stuff in my computer (such as my scanner) needs Acrobat, so it's a problem.

Can anyone recommend a solution?

While I have no personal experience with Foxit PDF Reader, I would give it a try if Adobe fails:

Edit: I just saw you need more than the Reader alone. I don't know

Adobe Reader 7.0.8 is the latest version.

The thing is.. if something external prevents AA to startup properly, which the problem seems to be, it will probably freeze the new one too.

Probably, possibly, but perhaps not?

Try running the ccleaner before installing

Evil I tell you

I ran the ccleaner (thanks a bunch, great freeware ) then installed AA 7.0

It worked only once. Now its jammed shut and in 30 days the product nukes because I can't reg :mad2:

Whatever the software conflict is, I want in on it

So, umm.. anyone has any idea for a next move?

I solved it, or rather: someone smart solved it and I just googled it up!

In a nutshell:  my 6.0 perpetually asks to update to 6.0.1, and this higher version absolutely floods a directory with temporary files.

I had to remove the other tempfiles, do a folder switcheroo and delete the old one, because Adobe indeed had made over 50.000 temp files in that folder.

The remedy: not updating my 6.0 to 6.0.1 and problem solved!
Thanks, friendly stranger

Thanks for your help with this David!

I guess it's a problem with 6.0.1 that will only just now be coming to light for many people who all updated when the version was released. 6.0.1 lets acr*.tmp files build up so much that nothing further can be stored in the Temp file in C:/program files/documents & settings/USERNAME/Local Settings/Temp

so Adobe won't open, also I found my computer running slower and slower.

When you update to 6.0.2, running the new version and closing it should then automatically delete all the accumulated *.tmp files. You may however need to delete some of the *.tmp files first to allow room for the first run of the updated version. I had nearly 100,000 *.tmp files since I open and close Adobe a LOT.

So... for you googlers looking for a solution I'll put in a few key words that kept coming up for me when I was having the problem;

FONT CAPTURE
Acrobat IEHelper acroiehelper.dll
iexplore.exe
referenced memory at 0x00000004 the memory could not be "read"
AVToolTipView.exe
adobe reader not opening stalling
