altered states wasnt about amanitas...
it was about a brew with a bunch of things in it.
it would be nasty to trip to, those hellish scenes would freak me the fuck out. it was a great movie sober though, i actualy used some sound clips from it to make a little song.
EDIT: few songs actualy.

The movie was ispired by a heavy ketamine user who used plenty of lsd and other psychedelics in his time. Hes the guy in the tank(sort of).
John C Lilly. A great man
Its not about amanitas. Its about some concoction that involves mushrooms but they never make it too clear in the movie.
Its a great movie. I suggest just getting really stoned and watching it next time. The movie is kind of silly but really great at the same time. I dont watch movies when tripping, but if I did that movie is great and very trippy, but thats still not one of the movies I would watch.
Its not about amanitas though. I dont understand where you got that idea.

uhhhh.....while they're climbing to trip with the tribe the guide says that they are Amanita muscaria and goes on to talk about they're chemical properties.....Not to get too far into semantics but its true that the brue also has other things in it....including blood, which they probably did just to cut the white guy . There are some Classic sound clips in there too

Yeah South Park even did their own take on it with Cartman on the Dog Whisperer episode. When he starts going ballistic and turning into TV snow my friends and I were like, "No fucking way!" We thought this movie was rare and unknown, and there Parker and Stone are spoofing it on Comedy Central

better to read lilly's book _center of the cyclone_ for the real deal...
(the paddy chayevsky novel/screenplay was a hollywood rip-off from the lilly manuscript, back in the day...)

Personally, I thought altered states sucked balls. The first 15 minutes presented some interesting ideas, but from there it just tanked and became wild and nonsensical. Not nearly as interesting as it sounds/coulda been. IMO of course.

Yeah after the whole monkey thing unraveled I was like "uhhhh....". Then again it was my second mushroom trip and I loved it I still get a kick out of that professor guy with the glasses that sounds like a munchkin.

Thats so odd. im sitting at my computer wanting to write a post to see what people thought about the movie altered states, and to my suprise, there already is one.
It might be attributed to the fact that it was playing to day on the cinemax thriller channel.
This movie reminded me of Jeff Goldblums "the fly." I know a guy who built his own sensory deprevation float tank. ive been meaning to try it out.
