Testing Fruiting Containers (Pics)
    #6093324 - 09/23/06 01:44 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Been using old salad containers for years now for casing, tired of the cleanup and they are brittle.

I found these things at walmart when I was with the wife, and I'm thinking I can use plastic trashbags, fill with water, cut the ecess, then rubberband. Fill with verm bottom, then colonized sub, then case.

The only worry is when I knife the casing after a first flush (like deep scratchin) don't wanna rip the bags.

What do you guys think, prob someone has done it.

Any feedback much appreciated.

BTW, the site has become so user friendly for posting pics, nice work admins

Really any container will work. Personally, I'd look for something that doesn't have holes and doesn't need a bag.. seems like more work than it should be. Some people have found inexpensive plastic shoeboxes at wally world for like $5 for 10 I believe, and they made prime containers. It's all about preference though.

ya the holes had me worried, but with my terrarium, I need to fit right and need the sub depth. I tried 1 big foil pan but the sub layer wasnt thick enough. I have looked and looked for the right containers for my terrarium and the only other option is clear and duct tape.

I just thought the black bag idea would be sweet as far as cleanup.

Yeah, I use a trashbag a la Wronguy's double tub tek, and it does help loads with cleanup. Perhaps you could check a garden and supply center. They generally have those long black plastic troughlike planters for cheap, which can easily be cut to a custom size.

Out of curiousity, what is the depth of that current container you have.

depth is 6 inches, but what I do is alien substrate

http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7922

and I like to have 2 jars per cont, but I used to use these pasta trays (like salad trays) that were 3 inch deep, then I got 5 in my terrarium.

This is my old ass tek from way back, to get an idea http://www.mycotopia.net/site/article.php?18.255

I am fussy, I have found that small containers that can fit 2 cakes per the sq footage of my terrarium produces the best. I am a thin casing, fast fruiting pro, but you need to get the sub depth correct.

Like I tried 1 big tray, and I find transpiration is different, so I go with smaller trays. I have tried the small bread pans that make it 6 per my terrarium. But I did not get the yield that i did with 5.

So the search began for the right containers since I finally threw the ones I had my wife give me from her old job.

I guess the next suggestion would be to get a diff size terrarium.

you can get sweaterboxes from walmart that exact same size.
Place a piece of alum foil too keep the light out, and your set!
