White stuff growingthrough holesin lids
    #6091942 - 09/22/06 10:40 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

OK, this is crazy, I have a couple of jars that only have mycelia growing near one or two of the injection sites, but it is slowly spreading throughout the cake and I see no contamination in the uncolonized material. But here is the weird part, one of these jars has this puffy white stuff growing out of three of the holes in the lid! Some of this stuff has even forced its way out through the threads and is growing out from the edge of the lid.

The stuff is almost pure white, sometimes with brownish hues, not much different than the stem of a smroom. This just started recently, the jars were inoculated about 4 weeks ago. These jars were very moist. Not sure what I did wrong, but this batch of media just turned out extra wet. I thought it might be so wet that they wouldn't even colonize, but the part that is colonizing looks fairly normal, other than the crazy stuff forcing its way out of the jars.

Two other jars of the same strain appear to have white stuff just below some of the holes. The white stuff always corresponds to the areas where mycelia growth is good. Any ideas what this might be? Do you thing that fruit is trying to grow its way out of the jar? The temperature in my area has dropped significantly over the past couple of weeks, and the jars are just in a closet with no careful temp control. Could this have initiated fruiting?

Can you post pics? Not trying to bring you down, but it might be aggressive contams.
Pics would help the experts here(not me, btw) give you the best advice.

It's because the jars were made up too wet. The verm barrier got wet and is supporting mycelium growth instead of serving as a filter. Make up a fresh batch of jars and pay special attention to the moisture content.

:blush:just cause its old and rusty doesn't make it any more succeptible to bacteria than a new lid...

Vermiculate layer was used. Thanks for the pic, that is very similar to the stuff coming out of my lids, except nowit has grown into fairly large masses. I think I just used a slightly inaccurate measureing device for the dry ingredients when mixing up the media. I knew it was wet, but figured it would be a good experiment. Fortunately, I have several other batches that were not so wet and seem to be doing fine.
