QUICKEST drying method
    #6089314 - 09/22/06 03:39 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I've always just put em in front of a fan takes 3 days roughly. What's the quickest of all drying methods? Is a day or two possible?

Make a drying chamber :p 24hours to dry in chamber than desiccant drying to cracker in less than 2 day with desiccant.

I think people have come up with some really cool drying chambers before. Hyphae has a spaceship looking ones, I have a simple tub fitted with fans and baffles. Some people mix it in with little heat source. I think some people went as far as getting a food dehydrator.

if you are using a box fan...

Go to lowes or walmart and purchase 2 airconditioning filters *around $3.00 each* make sure you find the size that is closest to the measurements to your fan.

take mushrooms and lay them out on one of the filters.

lay other filter over the mushies.

Ghetto rig togther with ductape, OR if you want to be all real about it you could also use hinges on one side and a latch on the other... I'm a duct tape person myself.

DUCT TAPE the filters to your fan, turn to medium.
They will dry within 12-24 hours, remove the rest of the moisture with desicant *silica get beads, or damp rid in chambers*

DESICANT CHAMBER
*quart or larger sized jars*
Again with lowes, homedepot or walmart.
Purchase some screen material make sure you get some that is pliable, but reasonably modable and stiff. It won't take much, so have them cut maybe 2 feet.

Cut 2 circles of screen if you use the jar and make a circle around the bottom, you can cut around that. Remove 1st circle, push the circle down inside the jar, leaving about a half an inch from the bottom.
Fill screen on top with 1/2 inch of silica or desicant, place another screen on top, place shroomies that have been drying on your box fan setup to a point where they are shrivled dry to the touch, and kind of leathery, in the jar *as many as you can get in there without shoving and pushing* close top.
Wait 12-24 hours.
They'll be cracker dry.

I haven't gotten to this stage yet, but I found something cool...

The product name is Damp Rid, and it comes in pre-packaged tubs. I plan on drying them with the fan method above, then putting them in a smallish tupperware container with 2 DampRid things. It seems easier than cutting screens and shit!

Plus, they sell refills in half-gallon sized milk cartons, so you just keep re-using the containers.

When i would hunt them down in the past, i would eat a few fresh.
Then with the left over ones, probably like 30 or so, i would lay a box fan
facing down, and place 4 bricks at each corner, anything to get it
off the ground a few inches, then id lay fine screen, or window screen
over it, then set the fan to low.. 24 hours and u got crispy shrooms.

^^ this group dryd in around 20 hours on med. speed.

wow that is way too much work! skip the fan part and just use a desiccant (damp rid) setup!

a dehydrator will offer you the quickest, most efficient, easiest, and cleanest way to dry your mushrooms.

150 F gets my mushies cracker dry in around 13-15 hrs.

Doesn't the heat destroy the active ingredient?

There was a lot of discussion about that. Some people take out the heating coils. But I think all the people who used food dehydrator agreed 110F had no noticeable effect. 150F is first time I see as suggestable temp.

Sun dry? You still need supply of lots of dry air. Air around and pocketing between mushies would quickly go up in water saturation and without additional air flow, it's just going to dry unevenly and slowly. In addition, heat and direct sunlight...

I think in order, following are preferred methods: Food Dehydrator, AC, fabricated drying chamber, fan. And of course, after total shrinkage, transfer to desiccant chamber to cracker dry.

I put mine in front of a small heater that has a fan. They dried within 8 hours, then I put then in a desiccant overnight. Cracker dry pretty quick this way. It's basically a poor mans food dehydrator.

I use several American Harvest Snackmaster Dehydrator's set at 95 degrees F.

I pick them up at the local 2nd hand stores...for less than $7.00 a piece usually.
Value Villiage, Good Will, St. Vincent Depaul, Salvation Army....etc.

Most of them are in new condition...like they were never used.

I even buy the broken ones for $1 just for the extra racks...
new racks are like $10 to $15 for 2 of them...plus shipping online.

So check those 2nd hand stores!~

I can dry my shrooms out in 24 hours or so...
with no noticible potency loss.

primary loss of alkaloid is from oxydation from oxygen and water. I think if you can make tea effectively, 150F for a half a day of drying should be okay. It would be nice to see someone with a low heat food dehydrator and a fabricated dryer box do some comparisons, though.

yes they make noise...

they have a fan running inside the unit...

so it sorta sounds like a hair dryer on low speed.
