Boletus, Hen of the woods?
    #6050422 - 09/11/06 03:55 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Took a little hike in the woods today. I found lots of srooms and a big nest of baby ticks. Note to self: deet = happy shroom hunting. The only 100% ID I was able to make was on some Mycena species of unknown edibility. Any guesses on the photos below would help me out allot. I’m going to make my girlfriend buy me a better sroom guidebook for my birthday. Which book should I ask for?

Species #1

Habitat: Found growing on the ground in deciduous woods.

Tubes: Gold brown bruising dark, adnexed

Stem: up to 7 cmYellow, with black streaks/bruising.

Cap: Yellow, gold, brown slightly sticky, cracking bruising brown.

Odor: strong mushroom odor, very rich

Location: Picked in KS.

Species #2

Habitat: Found growing on dead tree in the woods.

Gills: White running back to common stock. (Hen of the woods has tubes right?)

Cap: gray, brown, and white fuzzy up to 7 cm broad.

Bruising: None.

Odor: Very light.

Location: Picked KS.

Species #1 looks like some kind of bolete, judging by the description. The photo doesn't give much information, so I wouldn't be able to narrow down to a species. Probably it's in either the boletus or the suillus genus. Boletus chrysenteron is a possibility.

Species #2 is definitely not hen of the woods. It could be schyzophyllum commune, of which I have a picture here. Perhaps you recognize it?
