Phish is most well-known for their 'live' recordings. You could download a number of bootleg shows for free.
But if I were to a pick a studio album 'Billy Breathes' is really a nice chill mellow one to introduce you to Phish. I love making love with that album playing - it's one of the few bedside CDs I keep around.

I reccommend either of those.

Check out Junta or Lawnboy for some of their older classics, but really, all of them are great and very different from one another. I would def. check out their older stuff before buying some of the newer albums. I would say try Rift, probably my favorite.

Of the studio albums you got it right on psylocyberin. Although the whole album is sweet, I gotta say stash is by far my favorite. Trey anastasios can improvise, has got the chops, and in this one he demonstrates hes got sweet sweet touch. He plucks those strings just right.

story of the ghost is not a good phish "starter" album.
lots of people buy it as the first album because it has cool artwork, but end up not liking phish because of that album.

Don't buy a Phish studio album. Personally I'd recommend going to www.livephish.com and purchasing the live recording from 2/28/03 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY. Definitely the best show in my collection.
The best part is you can just download it as soon as you pay for it. Forget about buying a studio album, the essence of Phish is in their live performances.
I'd also recommend include "IT" from 8/02/03 and 8/03/03 and any of their archival releases from 1990-1997, thats some good stuff.

I second Pictur of Nectar and would add Lawnboy and Story of a Ghost. Lawnboy is my favorite studio album.

i'd recommend getting "a live one." it has some of my personal favorites and was the first album that got me into jam bands.
