Iraq on the Record, 237 misleading statements made by Bush Administration
    #6034286 - 09/06/06 04:56 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

http://democrats.reform.house.gov/IraqOnTheRecord/

The Iraq on the Record Report, prepared at the request of Rep. Henry A. Waxman, is a comprehensive examination of the statements made by the five Administration officials most responsible for providing public information and shaping public opinion on Iraq: President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

This database identifies 237 specific misleading statements about the threat posed by Iraq made by these five officials in 125 public appearances in the time leading up to and after the commencement of hostilities in Iraq.

"Most of the misleading statements about Iraq - 161 statements - were made prior to the start of the war in Iraq. But 76 misleading statements were made by the five administration officials after the start of the war to justify the decision to go to war," the report said.

According to the report, the misleading statements began at least a year before the start of the war in Iraq, when Cheney stated on March 17, 2002: "We know they have biological and chemical weapons."

Between September 12, 2002 and July 17, 2003, president Bush made 55 misleading statements relative to the threat posed by Iraq during 27 public appearances. On October 7, 2002, three days before Congress had to vote on the resolution relative to the war in Iraq, president Bush pronounced a speech in Cincinnati during which he made 11 misleading statements, the most important total of the 5 officials in a single speech.

A couple examples:

"Now, transport yourself forward a year, two years, or a week, or a month, and if Saddam Hussein were to take his weapons of mass destruction and transfer them, either use himself, or transfer them to the Al-Qaeda, and somehow the Al-Qaeda were to engage in an attack on the United States, or an attack on U.S. forces overseas, with a weapon of mass destruction you're not talking about 300, or 3,000 people potentially being killed, but 30,000, or 100,000 . . . human beings."
Source: Secretary Rumsfeld Live Interview with Infinity CBS Radio, Infinity-CBS Radio (11/14/2002).

"Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al Qaeda. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help develop their own."

come on, this isn't a "democrats are better than republicans" thing, or vice versa, who gives a shit about that. and anyhow, I think a bunch of lies to go to war far outweigh a lie about sexual happenings. the two can't be put on the same level ya know

Both of the examples you cite are one hundred percent accurate statements.

"in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption"

Quote:

That implies ownership. Hussein did not own weapons of mass destruction thus the statement is misleading.

Well since we did find chemical weapons in Iraq then Saddam did own them. However, I doubt that Saddam even knew he still had some left and he probably wouldn't use them on us but he did have them.
