h/poo too hot!
    #6030599 - 09/05/06 08:24 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I tried a search because I figured this has been answered before, but apparently I'm horrible at using the search engine cause I couldn't find it.

I was pasteurizing some h/poo using the oven bag tek. My oven doesn't have a little door to monitor the temp through, so every once in a while I just had to open it to see what temp it was at. It was going very very slowly. I opened to check once more a little later and the temperature was at 200 degrees! I know you're not supposed to go higher than 185, but is it still usable?

Like why aren't you supposed to go hotter than 185? Did I just sterilize instead of pastuerize? Please say I don't have to throw away all this poo. It's all I have. Plus my jars are all like "spawn me! spawn me please!" *weeps bitterly*

it causes a bacterial bloom (explosion) pretty much guarantees you contamination if used... at least that's what I've read in the past.

Ovens are horrible places to pasteurize substrate. Air can't transfer heat nearly as well as water can.

What was at 200 degrees? The oven or the center of your substrate?

The center of the substrate.

Damned. I guess I'll just have to throw that out and use this coir I have.

It will still work. I'd just mix the horse manure with the coir you have, and let it rip. It's best to keep pasteurization temps down, but many people actually sterilize manure and get decent results, so don't throw it out. Next time, pasteurize in water.
