An anonymous tip and more than a week of investigation led Missoula authorities to a 290-plant pot bust Wednesday morning.

A 30-year-old California man was arrested at the scene of the marijuana grow operation, and will be charged on multiple drug-related felonies Thursday in Missoula Justice Court.

Thomas J. Lisberg, whose criminal history shows he maintained an active list of 17 aliases, is also being held on charges out of Eureka, Calif., for attempted murder and second-degree robbery.

Local law enforcement agencies who assisted with the arrest include Missoula's office of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas, the Missoula County Sheriff's Department, Missoula Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Agency and Missoula's Office of Probation and Parole.

Detectives learned of the grow operation through an anonymous Crimestoppers tip and spent more than a week gathering evidence. A Missoula detective obtained a search warrant for the house on South Ninth Street on Wednesday morning.

When officers entered the house, they could immediately smell the marijuana plants and heard the whirring of fans.

Narcotics Sgt. Rob Taylor said it appears Lisberg was conducting “a sophisticated grow operation.”

Detective T.J. McDermott said the marijuana plants varied in their stages of maturity. Although some plants had only recently been potted, others were as high as 5 feet tall.

Once mature, each plant produces an average of one pound of marijuana, which can be sold on the street for about $1,500. Taylor estimated that the plants were worth about $435,000.

According to Taylor, the raid also turned up about $2,500 worth of psychedelic mushrooms, which had already been packaged for sale.

Lisberg will likely be charged with manufacturing, intent to sell and possession of dangerous drugs when he appears in court Thursday.

The warrant out of California stems from a case last December in which Lisberg is suspected of badly beating a man, then stealing his marijuana and growing supplies.

Lisberg, who California authorities called a transient, was staying at the victim's apartment at the time of the alleged crime. The two men were watching a movie on Dec. 18 when the victim fell asleep. He then awoke to Lisberg beating him over the head with a blunt object. The victim fled the apartment and called authorities.

When the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office responded, they found a marijuana grow operation in the victim's apartment. Lisberg apparently stole marijuana, growing supplies and money from the apartment.

The victim's injuries required hospitalization, and doctors had to staple the head wounds closed.

“It was a pretty brutal attack,” said Brenda Godsey, a public information officer at the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. “But it looks as though you've got him now, and I'm sure we'll be seeing him again soon.”

Taylor said the Crimestoppers tip was instrumental in Lisberg's arrest.
