Some of their carvings and what not contain flying machines with odd looking creatures operating them thats where the theory comes from I think. I sort of believe it but due to a lack of information I have no strong convictions about it.

It's not a theory if it can't be proven to be false, and if it can't make predictions that can be tested by experiments.
For example, there is Condensation Theory:
It can be proven false by leaving a cold glass of iced tea out on the porch on a humid summer day. If no water condenses on the cold outside of the glass, the Condensation Theory is proven false.
Condensation theory predicts that if you put the glass in a sealed chamber where the air is as warm as a summer day but in which the air has been dried to zero percent relative humidity, no water will condense on the outside of the glass. When the experiment to test this prediction of the theory is performed, no water is found to form on the cold outside of the glass.
That result does not prove the theory as nothing in science is ever proved. However, the result lends support to the theory. As more experimental results are found to support the predictions of the theory, it is considered more and more likely to be true but never, no matter how many experimental tests it passes, is it ever considered to be fact. It will ALWAYS be a theory.
This is one reason it irks me when ignorant creationists call Evolution Theory "just a theory". Duh! If they understood the meaning of the word Theory, they wouldn't state the obvious.
The 2012 balony is made up stuff that doesn't come anywhere near qualifying as a theory. It can't be proved false even if it actually is false, and it makes no predictions that can be tested to verify or falsify it.
I wish people would learn the meaning of the science words they use around here. And I get picked on for calling mystics, mystics when even they can't give me a consistent definition.

Pretty freaky, eh? Looks like a reptile from Sirius to me too. Problem is the guy who cropped those pics and posted them on his web site as proof of ancient paintings of ET was not interested in the truth. He was only interested in backing his beliefs rather than using critical thought to make sure what he thinks is the truth really is the truth.
An archaeologist, who is a scientist and therefore more interested in the truth than in being right, whatever that truth may be, finds this painting after searching with a critical mind:
ET is a flower pot. 
Repeat for the 2000 year old painting of a helicopter, space ship, rocket, and all the other nonsense people put out on the internet to feed the imagination of the gullible.

I think maybe you can call it an idea if it is less offensive. I'm not saying that its right. I'm just saying that discrediting it based on connotation is a bit too much like the politicians that say "but he did such and such", rather than dealing with the issue. From what I've read on the subject (and seen in Stargate(just kidding)) they include more that just the ancient Americas in the ET equation. Maybe they are right or partly right. You know some scientists believe that microbes on Mars could have seeded life on Earth via a transplanetary meteor. Anyways, its not like scienTISTS, as opposed to SCIENCE, are always as objective as you try to make it sound. A belief is a belief period. You will look for what you believe to be true period. A person can blindly follow or fanatically support any belief. Anyways maybe there is a genre of unexplainable phenomina that has in ancient times, via their mythology, been associated with/as the gods and in recent times, via the pop-culture mythology of UFOlogy (or whatever the hell you want to call it), as aliens and UFO's. I don't know I've always liked the idea. Read a few well written (maybe not grounded, but well written) books on the subject. I have more of a tendancy to buy in to this IDEA than the ones about Zork and his cronies traversing the cosmos to assrape Jim-Bob and his cattle. I just like the idea I guess. It sounds cool anyways.

Diploid, I don't see an alien anyway!
What makes me believe E.T does visit Earth is the fact that I and many many others have seen what can only fit into the descritpion of an unknown flying machine.
Like your flower pot idea, if it looks like a flower pot then it probably is!!!
Many UFO's seen close-up look like machines, they are metallic and often have a humming sound like an engine of some sort and they have lights. They fit all the descriptions for a flying vehicle.
To say they are E.T is a little bit harder but my personal main reasons for this belief is that we humans simply havn't had good flying technology very long. These machines have been described since the dawn of man.
Also many people have had a chance to see the occupants which are rarely human.
So if it looks like a flower pot then it probably is.
To me it looks like many UFO's are machines which are likely to not be piloted by humans.
