Question about Colonization
    #598045 - 04/03/02 10:00 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

My FOAF's cakes are about 85-90% colonized, and he was wondering, is it normal to still be able to see the vermiculate on the sides of the jar?

I dont know if this is what you mean by seeing the verm on the sides of the jar but cakes shrink a little while in the jar and sometimes the dry verm layer on top can come down on the sides a little

I'm doing my first jars and noticed a couple small clumps of verm down at the bottom too. It seems to have just a little bit of mycelium on it though. So far it hasn't contaminated so I think I will be safe and it's not a big deal.

The jars are fully colonized I think, however there are a couple 1/2" spots where you can see the brown from the substrate behind the white blanket of myceluim. It seems to have grown in thinner there. I'm just assuming this is normal. I plan on birthing the cakes Friday. They've had a week since 100% surface colonization.
