Putting jars on heating vents
    #597065 - 04/02/02 09:17 PM (22 years, 19 days ago)

Hi I was just wondering if I placed my colinizing jars on my vents that are a bit warm if that would help speed up colinizing time? I have no Idea if this would help but I think its worth a shot.

Hmmmm.... a couple of things come to mind...

1. How hot is the air coming out of the vent? I have been near heating vents that are smokin hot, but the room is only 72 F. You want about 86 F, Mycelium will die at 106 F, so I would check into that...

2. Would that type of heat dry your jars out? Maybe, but I'm sure someone out there knows better than me.

Good luck to you, if it helps... my Llama has had great luck putting his jars in a stearlite "sweater box" with about 1" of 50/50 water & Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) with a small heater running 1/2 hour on, 1/2 hour off...

Peas,

Slo

I never used an incubator till now, but that concept of the incubator is create an environment outside that you want to be inside. So does the air coming from the vent contain humidity? Does it even matter?

Sounds like a good idea... unless you can obtain a digital thermometer that records the high and low temp, and leave it there for 24 hrs. and see what the temp ranges are... just a thought.

Good luck, keep us posted! (so to speak.. heh)

Mushman, i tried the same thing and all i did was put a small rag under the jars so they wouldnt heat up too much but still got warmer than room temperature. My jars got fully colonised in no time.

It really depends on what type of heat you have and how
you use it.
A typical heat pump should add about 18 degrees to the air that
it's taking in. So if the termp at the filter is 70 deg, then the output
at the floor grills should be 98. That is under normal operation
where the unit runs continually and cycle itself 24/7. If you have
a habbit of letting the house get cold while you're gone, then
coming in, and cranking it up. Turning the thermostat up over
2-4 (depending on thermostat mfg) degrees higher than current
settings  will kick in secondary heat banks that could provide
temps that might be fatal to mycelia.
If you have natural gas heat, there typically only one stage. Hot.
The safety shut-off on a natural gas unit will allow the temp to
get up to 195-215 The better the airflow the lower the heat-exchanger
temps will run. But any restriction on the intake or output and
they can run quite hot without signaling a problem.
Baffling one vent near jars could be just enough heat to be perfect.
But not likely. And it is highly risky.
The ideal temp for mycelia is 86 but the growth rate drops sharply
after it gets above that. (see Anno's chart)
http://shroomery.org/faq/faq.php?display=faq&nr=33&catnr=3&prog=1&lang=en
You might get it to work, but I wouldn't risk such a precious project
when a aquarium heater only costs 10 bucks at walmart and
about 4 bucks on eBay.
Just my 2 cc's on the matter. Hope that helps.

BAH!... just heat your whole house to 86 degrees.

Or if there is a vent near the thermostat you could build an enclosure containing the shrooms and the thermostat. Then connect the vent to the encloure.

Oh wait, that would be a pain in the ass.

I just put all my jars up there the jars are warm to touch but not hot and they were a little cool to touch before all I did was lay a couple hockey socks on the vents so the jars aren't sitting directly on the vents so it doesn't build up to much heat the jars seem to be showing moister inside when they were starting to dry out in my closet I think I have a great Idea with this and if screw up oh well live and learn but I have a feeling this is going to speed up the myclium growth up alot.

Success after a few days of being up there the growth has speed up a great deal. Its eating away at those cakes like nothing now. I also think its more humid up there I can see moisture in the jars. In a few days some of those should be ready for birth.
