commercially available cow manure
    #5953691 - 08/11/06 12:21 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Anybody have any success with this stuff? I was cleaning out my garage and found an open bag. It's probably from home depot and really old. I was thinking of pasteurizing it with some straw and vermiculite but I don't want to waste time or cakes if it's not feasible.

Some of the biggest mushrooms I ever grew were on composted cow manure out of the bag. Just mix it with coir and verm to fluff it up along with the straw, then add gypsum and pasteurize. Most people aren't aware that cow/steer manure has more nitrogen content than horse manure. We usually prefer horse manure simply because of the texture, because it's ready to use once field aged and dried.

I used cow manure when I just was starting out. It contam ed. I tried again and it fruited, problem was it produced like 3 fruits.

it may have been the age. It may have been the acidity level it the compost. But one thing was for sure...my shit sucked.

Maybe your brand is better.

Store bought bagged product is IMO hit, and miss.

Most often "miss".

The reason being is.

Most bagged steer manure comes from feed-lots, or diary cows.

It is not actually composted. But, left to rot in huge unturned piles.
Consequently, it is usually high in ammonia/urine content.
It often contains a high salt contented, as well as fungicide/insecticides that were used to control flys/odor. Some can have a nitrogen content that is so hot, it will impede mycelium growth. Nor, is the texture usually anywhere near optimal.

Given all the possible downsides.
I personally would waste spawn on it.

Just my $0.02 cents

I grow a couple time with bagged cow manure. The time it worked , I got nice sized shroom and good flush.I tried S.a , not sure why but I got trichoderma mold on the caps or bacterial blotche but the mushroom were good sized. Here is a pics of some healthy mycelium running trought straw and composted cow manure from the store. The other pics is south american on straight manure, cased with peat moss.

You did WELL

The trouble is, bagged manure differs by region.
Meaning, it comes from differing sources.
Simple economics dictate, you cannot ship manure far.
Without adding considerable cost.

So, yours worked for you.

That is no guarantee that it will work for others, elsewhere.
Simply because, it will have come from a different source.
Which may or may not be as good as what  you used.

The main reason I'm considering trying is because its been sitting so long in an open bag that it's completely dry and has no smell whatsoever. I'm thinking it's sort of been composting in the bag. Its very powdery... I'd definitely have to mix it. Will probably do the coir/verm mix since I already have alot of both. I guess i"ll do a small test run .... maybe crumble 4 or 5 cakes just to see if it colonizes.. Can't hurt to try.

Just don't neglect to check and adjust the ph to 8 at the start, and add ten percent gypsum by volume and you'll be fine. The worst thing people can do is think they can just take it out of the bag and use. You can't.

The Ph is actually pretty neutral ... tested it with a litmus strip it was in the 7.25 to 7.5 range. Should I still add a little gypsum? Some one else suggested i should add worm castings but I really just want to see if I can get results with stuff i already have. If i wanted to go out looking for stuff I'd get some better poo to begin with. Just want to satisfy my curiosity more than anything.

Even more important.. If I decide to do this then what's a good ratio of crumbled cakes vs. Substrate to use? I'm thinking 4 - 1/2 pint cakes. Is 4 parts substrate to 1 part cakes a good rule of thumb?

Use gypsum. It does little to change ph. That isn't its purpose. One to four is a good ratio.

I have read a few members (Bluelou and Roadkill come to mind first) have had decent success from the use of Black Kow products. Although on the other hand, I also have read its pretty regional, in that its not exactly of the same quality throughout its distribution range.

Edit: But I do second the notion of fluffing it up as RR suggested.

First off I have never tried Black Kow products.

lolzz

You might have seen me in Lou's thread praising his grow using the stuff...

but I have never seen Black Kow here in the Pacific Northwest.

From what I hear it does vary quality wise in the East Coast...

several people had great grows with the stuff from the Floriduh area....

and then some people in the New York and Maine area had bad luck with it.

Agar used to always talk about it in posts!~

There is absolutely nothing wrong with cow poo!!!!

As long a you make the substrate as loose as possible (with verm. and gypsum as R.R. wisely suggests) it works as well as any dung.

As far as bang for the buck goes, Cow poo is the best.
