PF Tek - Do I wait to see pinning to birth?
    #5929601 - 08/03/06 07:49 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Do I wait to see pinning to birth? Or do I birth them before hand? Or does it not matter?

i am 100 percent colonized.

I am wondering what to do next..

Do I cold shock to induce pinning, then birth them after i see pinning?

Or do I, cold shock and then birth them immediately afterwards?

Also, I read a few days back about pouring water in tha jars, while I cold shock them... kind of as a pre-dunk thing before tha first flush. I am getting confused...

Please help!

you don't need to cold shock them but feel free. I would just dunk them overnight in the fridge then roll them in fresh verm then mist lightly. Toss them in the fc and wait..

This is a constant area of confusion, so don't feel bad. We use the refrigerator to dunk in because organic matter under water at room temperature will grow bacteria in a matter of hours, ruining your project. The cold isn't the best thing for the crop, but it recovers from the cold much easier than getting over a case of bacterial contamination. It isn't 'cold shocking' per se, because tropicals such as cubensis don't need that. Cold shocking is for temperate edible species that fruit in the fall after cold weather sets in.

The dunk is to get your substrate up to it's maximum moisture content just before fruiting so it can sustain a larger crop. Once you remove the cakes from the dunking water and place in fruiting conditions, they will pin, but remember, they pin on their own schedule rather than yours, so be patient. Have fun.

OH Wait!

One more question....

Do I have to worry about sterilization in my terrerium?

D Should i sterilize my perlite on the bottom?

Always worry about sterilization. There are periods where your projects are fairly resistant to contams but there is always a chance you could lose everything. I would say be as sterile as possible at all points of the equation..

A terrarium should be clean, but by definition a fruiting chamber needs lots of air exchange, and air isn't sterile. Don't use any toxic cleaners in your terrarium. The time for sterility is when you're making up the jars. There is zero tolerance for contaminants at that time. Once the substrate is fully colonized, your mycelium will take care of itself, eating bacteria and mold spores for lunch, as long as it's healthy, and you give plenty of air exchange. Most contaminants in a terrarium or even a mini-greenhouse can be traced to improper air exchange.

That's fine, the alcohol will evaporate. Just don't spray bleach or lysol in there.
