Spikey mycelium?! Fruiting question
    #5906402 - 07/27/06 07:14 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Ive got some Thai Ban Nathon growing here and have them in the same fruiting chamber as my Nepal Chitwans but the Thai Ban Nathon cakes seem to be getting mycelium turning into spikes.. it looks really weird and is covering most of the cakes...
I am 100% sure this is mycelium but what the hell is it doing?! Ive never ever had this before..

Its like that only the spikes are on the cake itself, not budding off of it
Thanks :-)

That does look crazy.  Never had anything like that on any of mine, however, I do have some cakes that were fully colonized 3 days after inoculation.  Fungus does weird shit. :dogpile:

wow, 3 days after inoculation? that's sooooo impossible, that you're dumb.

A jar can't fully colonize in 3 days, not even if the jar was the size of a shot glass. I'm not even sure it could fully colonize with trich that fast.

holy jeez, i want to shoot myself just from reading that.

even with an LC, the myc still needs to re-knit after being shot through a tiny hole. That usually takes a day or so in the first place, sometimes longer, then it has to actually grow and ingest the substrate, which i'm sorry, but is just impossible in that short of time. and i'm cool.

See, that's what I thought.

I completely understand why you would think that. Here's what I did:

We had some extra spore syringes here (we make our own) and kind of wanted to see what happened if we inoculated each jar with an entire syringe. I guess that's what happens when you waste spores like that.

And the myc didn't need to re-knit after being shot through a tiny hole; I use syringes with 14g needles. That way the spores go through whole. And yes they do make those, though you can really only get them at the hospital. I "borrow" mine from the hospital where I practice.

But thanks for calling me dumb before asking me exactly how I accomplished that. It made me smile.

still entirely impossible, not only would the water content be SO off, but it take even MORE time if you used a spore syringe... wtf
