Pride

Thich Nhat Hanh describes the three varities of pride this way:

1. Thinking I'm better than others
2. Thinking I'm worse than others
3. Thinking I'm just as good as others

I can understand 1 and 2, but wouldn't 3 be the only logical alternative? If you aren't better or worse than others wouldn't that make you equal with others?

Or is the idea that simply by conceptualizing equality, you inevitably conceptualize what would be better or worse, and thus involve pride?

I think the point is that it is not about others, it is about reality. It is not about social fiction. A Theravadin (the statement is from the Pali) would say it is about achieving nibbana, the end of rebirth. Considering yourself better, worse or equal is unrelated to that goal; it is a wrong paradigm for existance. It is like comparing the size of our shoes.

I think the point he's trying to make is that you shouldn't even be comparing yourself to others.
