Cocaine seizures largest ever in city
Dallas: 654-pound haul worth about $13.3 million results in four arrests

Officers are hailing two drug busts that netted about 654 pounds of cocaine as the largest such seizures in Dallas police history, worth an estimated $13.3 million on the street.

Police found 294 1-kilogram packages of cocaine in a pickup in the 10500 block of Newcombe Drive.
"This is huge, huge," Deputy Chief Julian Bernal, commander of the narcotics division, said Wednesday. "In the big scheme of things, this is a lot of drugs. Any time you've got those kind of amounts, you obviously have some pretty serious connections."
"Any time somebody loses 650 pounds of somebody's dope, somebody's in trouble," Chief Bernal said.
Four people were arrested Tuesday in the two busts, which took place less than an hour apart and are believed to be part of the same drug operation. Chief Bernal declined to say how long police and a federal task force had been investigating the men, but he did describe how the raids took place:
First, police stopped a Dodge pickup about 7:50 p.m. that had been seen earlier at a White Rock-area home that was being staked out as part of a drug investigation.
The truck was pulled over for a traffic violation nearby on Northwest Highway. Chief Bernal said officers saw a gun inside and arrested the vehicle's occupants, then searched the vehicle. They found 3 kilograms of cocaine, or about 6 ½ pounds, in a cardboard box on the floorboard.
Alfonso Montemayor, 35, who was driving, and Gerardo Soto, 35, were taken into custody.
About 8:30 p.m., narcotics detectives went to a house in the 10500 block of Newcombe Drive and found two men about to drive away in a Ford pickup.
Police say Oscar Fuentes, 30, and Octavio Monreal, 19, saw the officers and tried to flee on foot, but detectives quickly took them into custody.
Police found 294 kilograms – or about 647 pounds of cocaine – uncovered in the bed of the pickup. Each kilo was wrapped in brown paper.
Police said the men appeared to be moving the drug operation and might have been tipped off that police were about to raid them.
Detectives found tools used in the trade, such as packaging material, in the home during a subsequent search that night.
"We also found some records with regard to the dope sales," Chief Bernal said. "It appears that this was a stash house, a wholesale-type situation. You're not going to come to buy a small amount of cocaine at this location."
Police also seized three semiautomatic handguns, two assault rifles, a shotgun and about $26,350.
