Are you dunking your casings between each flush? That will help you out greatly!

I'm starting some hpoo casings soon, and this has me scratching my head as well. Bumping for interest!
I keep hearing mixed things about dunking my casings, some saying it's the next best thing to sex, others saying that it isn't worth the extra effort. Confused is me.

As you can imagine, your casings will love the water it gets to soak up....and it's not hard to dunk either. I just clean my sink out really well and put the casing in the sink...right in the tray that I fruit in. I let it sit in running water for about 3 hours with weights on top to keep it submerged.

You can just mist your casings, however I think that you will find that your casings will shrink after your first flush. Dunking your casing is rather simple. I usually just fill my container with a lil bit of water and put it in the fridge for a few hours. Then pour off the water and back into the FC it goes. (Works wonders - trust us) -Me

That is normal. 85% to 90% of the total harvest with bulk substrates come from the first two flushes. Many commercial mushroom farms toss out substrates after two flushes because that piece of real estate is better used with a fresh tray.
You can't re-incubate a casing any more than you can jump back into your mothers womb and be re-born. When mycelium fully colonizes a substrate and goes into fruiting mode, veg growth stops for the most part.
Dunking is an accepted tek that has been proved to be effective for many years. As suggested, you can dunk in the tray you fruit in by letting the kitchen faucet gently run into the tray for a few hours, overflowing it. This procedure actually washes contaminant spores off your project and down the drain, making it less susceptible to contamination.
It's correct to patch the divots that are sometimes created when you harvest. Also, dunking under running water washes away much of the uncolonized casing material. After the dunk, simply apply fresh casing material into the divots and anywhere else that has exposed mycelium, such as around the edges where the substrate has shrunk. Don't go more than 1/4" deep, because it isn't going to colonize anyway, it's just for the micro-environment that a casing layer provides. Do not incubate after patching. Simply patch after the dunk and return to fruiting conditions. RR

But unfortunately for the male race we have been afflicted with the "Y" chromosome, which has us spending 9 months trying to get out but the rest of our lives trying to get back in. (Okay maybe not with our mothers) -Me

I experienced the same problem my first two flushes produce wonderful results. Now a week in a half later one mushroom popped up very big for a pin! I placed the mycelium into a clear glass mixing bowl its about 3inches deep and a weird curve on it. now looking at the bottom i see loads of pins should i cut the substrate in half and put it in two containers?

if you dry them absolutely 100% cracker dry and then store them in an oxygen-free container, you'll be fine. As to how to make an oxygen free container, there are numerous methods but I stick with the overly simple, vacumn seal it with a oxygen-gobbler pack.
Sorbent Systems sells them for cheap enough.
