id help - chicken of the woods?
    #5864743 - 07/16/06 09:23 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I picked these in Northeastern West Virginia. They were growing in a predominantly hardwood (red oak) area, but unlike typical COTW, they were growing out of the ground. I DID NOT make a spore print, but here is the rest of the information:

Habitat: Wood - Found in deciduous woods, lots of oaks, lots of woody/leafy debris

Gills: The underside of the mushroom is white/orange/cream with no real "gills," just some very tight folds. other samples have more pronounced folds than those pictured below.

Stem: thick and tough

Cap: orange, coming out in a fan shape from the top of the stem, folded up at the edges. orange.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in north eastern West Virginia

Not Chicken of the Woods, but Chanterelles! Even better. Nice finds!

The description and the habitat are a perfect match. It has a smoother underside than Cantherellus cibarius, but it could well be Cantharellus lateritius which is also good eating.

That one was pretty smooth, but it seems they can have a varying depth to their ridges.  Also, I thought it could be the smooth chanterelle, C. lateritius.  I can't seem to find anything but dried up looking chants  on my hunts recently.
