Virus, worm...?
    #5851839 - 07/12/06 07:09 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

This is very strange. My computer has been running fine all day until just a few hours ago while it was unplugged from the internet. When went to Task Manager to see what program(s) might be running that shouldn't be causing it to be super slow/draggy. The svchost.exe program has 5 applications running. Two in network service, two in system, and one in local service. Usually, there is no more than two of them running. All have different memory usages ranging from 100kb-22,000kb. Upon closing some of the tasks, my computer fails and starts a restart program (sorry, I don't remember the name).

On top of this, my Norton (which I don't really use, I use AVG) started giving me an error saying how it needed to be reinstalled.

I scanned for viruses using AVG. I turned off system restore and rescanned for viruses using AVG. Nothing. AVG had been updated this morning.

Any ideas why the program has opened so many of itself and why my computer is running slow if it is not a result of svchost.exe?

I dunno, i have six svchost.exe running on my task manager, but it doesnt really mess with my computer or anything? You also shouldn't have more than one antivirus with live watch capabilities installed. I think this may be your problem, get rid of norton completely...

peace

It's not uncommon to have multiple instances of svchost.exe

However, a number of viruses and worms disguise themselves by using the same executable name.

I had a particularly nasty one a while back that would exploit a windows stability feature and force the computer to reset after two minutes if it was connected to the internet. This was meant to make damn sure you didn't have much time to try and look up what was wrong, and then fix it.

Anyhow, have you scanned for adware/spyware/malware? Antivirus programs don't catch a lot of that stuff, and they have a tendency to be horribly coded peices of shit that cripple a system

You could always try formatting and installing Linux  :smirk:
