Disappointing successive flushes w/dung
    #5849072 - 07/11/06 10:34 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hi there. I am pretty experienced overall, but relatively new to dung. I've had some very successful first flushes (I use a mixture of dung and straw); but it's usually a miracle if I make it to a third flush that yields anything significant. I've heard of people getting good second and third flushes (and beyond), but I'm just not sure how to achieve those same results.
- I think it might have something to do with re-hydrating the dung/straw mixture. Do people just manually pull their 5-pound mycoblocks out and submerge them in a bucket or something?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

mushrooms are mostly water.. you need to water your substrate

Can you be any more specific? I spray, but don't want to get the stuff too wet, otherwise it increases the likelihood of contamination.

yes.

we call it dunking.

submerge the substrate in a tub with a weight
or another tub partially full of water (a weight of it's own)
and keep the water running a tad.

casings are not all that dense.
they do not need to dunk for 24 hours.
4-5 should be plenty.

after you submerge your casing for a few hours,
carefully remove it and place it on a rack or something to drain.
you want to drain it well so no water is dripping off of it at all.

when you place it back into it's container,
check to make sure no water pools when you tip it to the corner.

you want the substrate near saturation.
as hydrated as possible without dripping or releasing extra moisture.

apply fresh casing material where needed and place back
into your fruiting environment.

this will dramatically improve your later flushes.

are you casing your block of substrate? if so, maintaining frequent light mistings helps keep moisture up through the process and replenishes it between flushes. make sure when you mist to spray "over" the casing so only the fine mist drifts down onto it. key words here are "frequent" (as in a few times a day) and "light" - don't soak things, don't let your casing get matted down and clumped together, etc.

without a casing, its a little harder to keep moisture levels up. you can dunk an entire block of substrate though. you certainly can take it out of the container and submerge the whole thing as if you were dunking a giant cake... but you'll find that as flushes go on it becomes less of a block and more of a crumbly mess, so its not very practical because it might fall apart on you.

usually your substrate shrinks a little as it fruits, so you can pour water right into the crack that's created between the edge of your substrate and the container its in. you can fill it in this way, cover, and refrigerate for a few hours if you got room. (refrigeration prevents bacterial build-up in your dunk water) if you can't refrigerate the container due to size, the next best thing is to use a large utility sink, or even a bath tub. have a slow steady stream of water pouring into that crack so that it fills up and begins to pour over the edge. the idea here is to keep the water moving, again to prevent bacterial build up. in either of those situations, drain out the dunk water in your tray when finished and you should be nicely rehydrated.

Cool, thanks for the advice gaz.
Another question: Instead of using running water, would it be effective to simply add a good amount of hydrogen peroxide when you dunk? Just curious.

that would work.
but only for a while.

it breaks down.

ice cubes could be affective as well.

I use iodine for some things, that might be an option,
never tried though...
