Jars vs. Bags?
    #5816687 - 07/03/06 04:45 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Is there any advantage to using jars over bags, or vice versa, and if so, can anyone tell me what they are? I've been using jars since I fist got into this hobby, but a friend suggested bags. He never really explained why, tho, so I figured I'd ask the experts... I kinda wondered what Agar would have to say? Anyway, if anyone has any preferences between the two, I'd love to hear what they are, and why.

Bags are bigger. They don't break. They are cheaper to buy.

Jars are easier to shake. They don't tear and puncture. They are reusable.

Jars suck, I dont like them at all. And only use them for testing LC.

I don't know how to compare them, there are no advantages with jars. And the only downside to bags are there expense, but when you buy a 1000 price is not an issue. I thing bags are the way to go, I love them

When you autoclave bags, how do you keep them from touching the sides of the pot?

Well, thank you all so much for your input, it is much appreciated...I think I'm gonna go the bag route this go-round. Thanks to all the info on this site, I've pretty much been able to become self-sufficient. Changing to the bags will probably change that, unless....hey, does anyone have a tek, possibly with pics, on how one would go about producing one's own bags? I had this crazy sceme involving oven bags, poly-fill and micropore tape. After all, a bag is just a flexi-jar, is it not? Does this sound sound, or am I just sober and therefore fucked in the head?

i just went though this myself.  ive always used jars, but bags seemed so much easier.  so i  ran my first mycobags last weekend.  two more things to consider:

1)  As much as i love the look of jars welldone...

fuck a jar!

its not so bad cleaning them, i took a lesson from the bars and do a two dunk bath with bleach/soap and it goes kinda quick.  the only time i tried a dishwasher, i ended up clogging it with millet and poo.  badass.

2) jars take up a lot of space in a pressure cooker.  bags are a great way to up your substrate producing capacity if you cant afford a new pc.
-  i think i can fit almost 3x as much wbs than with jars.
- but you have to cook 2.5-3x as long, but with time spent cooling and warming up, it goes a lot faster.

then a bunch of LC!

Bags ROCK!!! As far as jars being easier to shake well you don't shake bags you knead them and it works a hell of a lot better than shaking IME.

Fuck jars they suck. If you are using an electric range and keep your temps in the 15-17 psi range depending on the mil of the bags you can let them touch the sides. I use 2-mil poly bags for casing and I cram the PC so full there is no room left. The bags are a little sticky sometimes if you do not keep an eye on temps and keep it in the 15 psi range. I bought sporeworks bags which are 40$ for 100 but someone told me they are thicker mil then the 30$ ones from another company. Another advantage to bags over jars is when spawning many people will open there jars and break the mycelium up 24-48 hrs ahead of time so it begins re-knitting itself so when you spawn it. There is no recovery time for the mycelium. with a bag you just kneed if a day ahead of time. No need to expose it to the elements.

I like keeping it old school...

I use jars.

Mostly because I have a crap load of them!~

I can see advantages to using bags though.

You don't have to clean them...

and if you get a contam you can just throw it away!~
