 benefits of changing drinking laws

what would the benefits be of changing the drinking age to 18 from 21... a lot of countries do this and i agree with them and think america should too... ive got a persuasive speech on this topic and would appreciate some input...

Well, as I recall they moved the drinking age up to 21 in the 80's because they felt that 18 year olds were getting alcohol for their younger compatriots. Pretty fucked up reasoning if you ask me, as me and my friend were getting it since we were 16. It was basically a political move to soothe such groups as MADD and the conservative mindset of the times, IMHO
Some argue that 18 is too immature to handle the responsibility of drinking, but I've met my fair share of immature 21 year olds. I've also met some very immature 30 year olds as well.

Were allowed to smoke tobacco and start having kids at 16, by that time apparently were not mature enough to drink a beer !

I used to want the age to be as young as possible - but after being at a party with 100s of loud annoying high school kids, drunk off their asses, my mind changed. They couldn't handle it and totally lost control. I almost ended up beating the shit out of some of them.
I now know why they moved the age up.

high schoolers arent 18, its mostly aimed torwards college kids...
so heres my arguement so far:
1.) There will be able to be supervised drinking, so people wont be getting beligerently drunk and make stupid decisions such as driving, unprotected sex with nasty girls, etc.
2.) If we are forced to sign up to Selective Service at 18 and are eligable for the draft and die for our country, we should be able to drink a beer.
3.) Tobacco is legal for 18 year olds and it is more addictive than alcohol and kills 4 times as many people than alcohol...
4.) If underage kids are gonna drink they will do it whether its illegal or not, so mind as well create a safer environment for them
anything i should change or add?

It's 19 here, thats not too bad though...in the Dominican Republic its either 10 or 12 i forget.

Well it was a graduation party, so the common age was somewhere around 18. The legal age is 21 here already.

My opinion is based on how some people under 21 can act while drunk.
Personally, I never did anything bad or out of control while drunk. I started drinking way earlier than when I was 18.
I probably started doing it frequently around 17 or so. When younger than 17, I would just drink very occasionally.
My family has a long line of alcoholism, not sure if that factors into it.
Perhaps the reason I see younger people getting out of control while drinking is because I only see them drinking at social events. Places like that can invite people to lose control.
I've never really drank with someone in a more laid back and quiet setting, so I guess I haven't seen enough to really form an opinion.

thats because those kids were in a uncontrolled setting BECAUSE it was illegal, if it were legal then theyd be in a more controlled setting and act different in my opinion...

Come to think of it, it doesn't really matter how old a person is, any age group can lose control while drinking.
All kinds of crazy stuff happens, domestic disputes, beatings, etc. Doesn't matter how old the people are.
A better argument might be the effect of drinking on ones choices during a crutial point in their lives - or how drinking might change attitude towards school work and career options.
