Possible active mushrooms?
    #5799075 - 06/28/06 11:43 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey  there folks,

Its been rainig here lately, and was dry today so i figured hey, lets see whats popped up around in the woods. On a big pile of dead wood/mulch I found several mushrooms growing. I am not going to even attempt to collect them without the obvious proper ID, but i figured there is no point in snapping some pictures or printing if they are not active and you could tell by a description instead.

They are white stemmed, with a black cap and white gills.
The stem looks sort of like a celery stalk, it curves around.
The biggest one growing looks inverted, that is the top looks more like a dish then a traditional mushroom.
They are growing near Northern new york (Lake Ontario)
They are growing on a pile of dead wood and mulch.
There were several ones already long dead on the pile, that smelled awful, but not like the previous actives I have ate.

Thanks in advance, if a possible actives i will snap some shots and prints.

They don't sound close to anything active from your description.

The mushrooms that could possibly occur in your area (this time of year possibly) and grow from wood include Gymnopilus species and P. caerulipes.

Thanks, I figured as much, but thought it still might be worth getting a second opinion on, any idea what they might be, active or not? :P
