Backyard find. id pls
    #5798403 - 06/28/06 04:26 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I'm new to hunting and was lucky enough to have these fellas pop up in my backyard over the weekend. The caps range from 10mm (1cm) to about 35-40mm for the big-uns and are a reddish brown and most have a fine white ring around the edges. The larger ones have a flat cap and the smaller seem conical. Big ones have brownish gills and a dark purple to black spore print and the smallies have beige-white gills and the same print. They were found in bark mulch in Sydney Australia.

What colour was the bruising??  It appears a pale reddish-tan in the photos.

If not for the spore print and gill colour, I'd be tempted to guess Russula sanguinea.  Though, I am not certain of this mushrooms distribution, if it reaches to Australia or not.  And you say there are veil remnants on the stipe of your mushrooms?
Could be Psilocybe subaeruginosa, Though the caps are mighty red... That'll be awesome if you have psychadelics growing in your backyard!
Wait for some more opinions
Welcome!

Hi deadvenusblue
Pretty sure those are Stropharia aurantiaca!
Can you get a clear close up of where the gills join the stem?
If they are then they're inactive, you are looking in the right habitat for Psilocybe subaeruginosa though.
Good luck.
inski.

Inski's got it!
S. aurantiaca fits the bill, growing commonly from wood chips and with a purple-brown spore print.

Good thinking Inski

Thanks guys, that looks like the ones. Here's a close up of the gills anyway.
